I'm wondering what watt iron people use to solder to the Xbox motherboard my weller 12 watt is fine for DVD-ROM boards and what not but just won't do the trick on Xbox motherboard
-
12watt should be fine , I use a 15watt or 25watt but , i got some experince with a iron
-
I've always used 30 watt.. I don't understand how people can burn SMT components with it, but It does the job for me
-
mine has a switch from 15-30 but the xbox mobo is a pain anyway, add flux and solder then try to desolder what your working on.
the new solder helps heat the stuff MS uses
-
I find the best to use is a 35 watt iron. Make sure you use plenty of flux too. Soldering to the 360 mobo is a pain because of the lead free solder.
-
15w with plenty of flux is safe
-
15 watt for me. :hifive:

I have an 85 Watt Adjustable pretty cheap. But I am gonna get this soon http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMD-Rework-Soldering-LCD-Digital-Station-Hot-Air-Gun-Solder-Iron-Welder-11-Tips-/370586123326?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5648a77c3e (http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMD-Rework-Soldering-LCD-Digital-Station-Hot-Air-Gun-Solder-Iron-Welder-11-Tips-/370586123326?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5648a77c3e)

Not trying to remove anything right now but last time I did a 12v fan mod the solder on the underside of the power plug just did not want to melt, eventually I got some solder on it but it looked like :censored:. I did get a 25 watt iron recently from a friend that never used it so next time I'll give that one a shot
-
I use a 25 watt, and i couldnt get it to melt either, i did the same thing with the fan, and it looked like crap
-
Good British Antex CS18.

I have a Weller WES51 50Watt adjustable station i use for whatever. Works well for desoldering anything
-
I have bought 2 of these (one for me, one for a friend):
http://www.circuitspecialists.com/soldering-stations-csi-station1a.html (http://www.circuitspecialists.com/soldering-stations-csi-station1a.html)
It works just as well as the Hakko I had at work. I have used mine for 4 years without problems, and I still cant believe the price. Its almost the same price as a generic 30 watt from RadioShack.
-
I have a 20+ year old 50w weller soldering station that belonged to my dad. I will hopefully get a smd rework station sometime this year.

i have two. a temperature controlled 60w (http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WES51-Analog-Soldering-Station/dp/B000BRC2XU) and a plain simple weller 25w (http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1340443)
-
I have the same one as fookz, I love it. I also use a cheapo desoldering pump from radioshack.
-
80w, with temp set to 350C, add leaded solder then its a dream to solder to the xbox's mobo
-
I use a 50W Magnum 2004 Temp controlled Iron, set between 250-300 degrees
Ps: got it second hand though, saw it in the shops for about 210$
