Title: FM transmitter built into a laptop
Post by: zack247 on March 04, 2012, 01:36:35 AM
I have been WAY too quiet here lately...

just a lot of life in the way i guess.

anyways, i said i had built a FM transmitter into my laptop.
it works like a charm :3
took one of those cheap in-car transmitters and hardwired it into my laptop.
yes, i have very messy wiring.. i shouldve taken more time to clean it up but i just wanted to get it done :P

First pic is the whole base of my laptop.
Second pic is the transmitter itself, with the wires attached labeled.

if you look at some of the old tiny laptops they have mini stereos and radio's and was good and was very light on battery life

but nice seeing a homemade wire up.

how do u see what radio ur on

on the LCD screen it displays the frequency it's set to when it is changed. I usually keep it at something like 105.0 since theres not many radio stations to cause interference with around there here.
it came with a little remote that allows you to change the frequency and it also has controls for if you are reading music from a flash drive.

of course with a different transmitter it might operate differently. but all of these cheap ones appear to work the same way, even the remotes IR codes seem to be the same.

Pretty good, i still dont have a battery for my laptop so i havent checked the distance yet. Ive found i get far better quality with digital radios rather than analog ones though.

this was my first time using one :P
so i wasnt really sure whats normal or not.
the only other thing i have to say about it is if i plug in/unplug something from my added line out jack the transmitter doesnt transmit very well. probably because the jack is shorting when i plug in/unplug something.
not a big deal, i just put my laptop into hibernate and start it up and its all good again.
