Title: Pretty in Pink, 3PS60 v4
Post by: RDC on January 19, 2013, 12:56:48 AM
I did this awhile back the 'Frankenstein' way with an original stripped down PS3 controller board and a hacked down Wired CL version 360 controller, http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=652308 (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=652308) and that method of making one had more than run it's course of fun after the second one I built.

So after making a handful of those things, I decided to not make any more of them, unless it was a wireless version. This isn't that wireless version (yet) but it's a step towards it along with being fairly complete on it's own.

It uses the same Wired CL version controller I used on those older 3PS60 controllers, as well as what I used to make the 360 miniCL version PCB, http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=742619 (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=742619) but this time the PCB has been made in the layout of the PS3 controller board.

So far this is just the Beta and has it's own issues that need sorted.

All loaded up with parts and ready for some testing.

So far everything has been tested, aside from the Headset connector.

The Triggers (L2/R2) on this one are not Analog, though I have plans to make it so they are in later revisions. The Daughter board also has to be altered to work, another thing I plan to address one of two ways, but those are things to deal with a bit further down the line.

Thanks.

Here's a crap video of it working in Halo 3.

wow amazing work, very professional way of approaching this idea. I'm not surprised that RDC pulled it off in this fashion.

I myself cannot stand the PS controllers, would rather you went the other way so I could actually play on ps3  .

That's also doable, but the PS3 controllers have soooo many different versions that it would either be limited to using just one version of DS3 controller, or I'd have to design a few different ones up, both of which are crap options IMO.

I've built PS360 controllers before - http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=651946 (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=651946) though granted that's the 'Frankenstein' way of making them versus this method of making the 3PS60 now.

The best thing for doing a PS360 right now is probably the PS36X board I'm working on. It's still technically the 'Frankenstein' way of making one, but since it takes all of the 360 board part stripping and trace cutting then rewiring out of the process, it's a bit less painless.

The PCB isn't really pink, that's just what the copper looks like thru the white solder mask, but it does look it, and more so when it's in the shell there.

This is just awesome. You're work is beautiful.
I might do a Frankenstein ps360. Controller, like the one you built with the PS3 board inside the xbox controller. I believe I have a good board all ready stripped and trimmed some. I have all ways wanted a 360 ps3 controller. But if you are deving a board that would be awesome.
IF I do have to build one, I would appreciate some help. I only had a quick look at the one over at the other site. Was there any problems relating to the analog triggers?

Thanks all.

@ 1TONpete - I don't have any real issues with keeping the Triggers Analog on a PS360, but I've already waded thru pretty much every freaking issue and problem that one can have with them. They will be picky, and can be one of the more involved things to deal with on the PS360 sometimes. The main thing there is you need to use Pull-Ups that are 7.5k in value. Then make sure the Trigger will sit just over that 7.5k when not pulled, 8k max, preferably 7.7k or so, then the lower it can get in value when pulled the better. If it has a range of 7.7k to 500ohms when installed, then you're done and you'll be beyond lucky if the second  one is half as good. If it has a range of 7.7k to 3k though, you'll need to try another POT as that one is just crap. You'll also notice that no matter how many you try, both sides will never be exactly the same, you just need get in the 7.7k to 1k ball park there is all really.

You'll find far more things than the Triggers to be 'fun' on building one of them though, especially if you're going to use a 360 board as the 'base board' from making it.
