Title: Wireless controller - best blue leds?
Post by: Johan1973 on February 12, 2013, 01:11:07 PM
Since I am sending my Xbox 360 off for service after an accident (to retain warranty even though it is an easy fix), I was thinking I would do some modding on one of my wireless controllers in the meanwhile. So I have been looking around for LEDs to start with. Blue leds generally require a decently high forward voltage in order to shine bright, and since you are on battery power with the wireless, it is easy to have the forward voltage drop to the point wher the lights dim or are not visible. Thats why I want to ask if you have any recommendation of blue smd leds for the wireless controllers?

You do not know if there is any suitable smd rainbow leds available? I can not find those anywhere.

no one has invented those yet, but i am sure it will happen one day.  you can buy rgb leds but you will have to hook them up to a chip that allows them to switch/fade through the colors.  the 5mm and 3mm leds that switch colors on their own have something inside of the led that does it (idk what it is, looks like a small black box) but i hope one day they'll be able to shrink that down to fit in a surface mount led!

also why would you want smd rainbow led in the controller as p1 or p4 are the only leds that stay on my 00.2$ itll look kinda funny
now if you do like a led thumbstick mod using 3mm thats a diff story

I can make led thumbstick mods, I have done that in the past. Dont need 3 mm rainbow leds, I have those. Just looking for smd ones. But as been mentioned here, seems they do not exist yet.  So its just to forget that idea.

As for dimming, there is no way around it happening on battery power, but you can diminish it by using leds that are easily driven with lower forwarding voltage. The original leds in the wireless controller is of this type.

I use http://lighthouseleds.com/ (http://lighthouseleds.com/)
they are pretty fast and cheap shipping. Order got here twice in 2-3 days with USPS. Large assortment of lights at a reasonable price. I have also bought lights from http://www.mouser.com (http://www.mouser.com) which has slightly better prices and a huge assortment but shipping is sluggish.

Ok. I am sorry for double posting. I will keep that in mind.

I ordered those RGB leds, then I realized, they are not what I was looking for. These needs logic to control the fading between colours, as you have the anode for each led separate. Not the same as rainbow leds that contain this logic and change colours by thsmselves. WHich means that the best I can do with these is a mod that allows me to change which colour the ring should be. Which is nto to bad...

Final update: Replaced blue leds I had in place with some other blue leds that had lower forwarding voltage, so they stay alight at lower voltage (though they still dim).
