Sony launched the latest salvo in its ongoing rivalry with Microsoft with the launch of the PlayStation 4, the first of a new generation of consoles. At an event held in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York's Manhattan Center, Sony revealed that the PlayStation 4 would go on sale this Christmas. It refused to set a price, or even show the console itself but it is unlikely to cost much less than £300

Lead system architect on the PlayStation 4, Mark Cerny, said "the development of a next-gen platform started about five years ago" and that it's goal is "freeing developers from technological barriers."

Cerny said the platform is "by game creators for game creators" and that its architecture is "like a PC, but supercharged." PS4 uses the X86 CPU and has 8GB of memory and a local hard drive. It uses APU technology and GDDR5 memory, which is typically reserved for "top of the line, high end graphics cards."

The pillars of PS4 are Simple, Immediate, Social, Integrated and Personalized. PlayStation 4 supports suspending and reloading play sessions. The console has a secondary chip for uploading and downloading in the background. Digital games can be played as they are being downloaded

I like the idea of the second processor to allow background downloads ect. I have been an xbox fanboy for a while now, but I am not afraid to say that I think sony has done a really good job here, wonder why they didn't show us the console itself.
Also to the people shunning the hardware in comparison to PC specs, you got to realize that not only do consoles run very light-weight operating systems (such that they have much less background processes running than a PC), but that their is a set standard architecture that game designers are familiar with allowing them to optimize the game by smart allocation of the consoles resources (rather than having to build for many different hardware configurations).
Be interesting to see all the comparisons once microsoft unveils their equivalent.

on a side note nice to see the rumors were true that the PS4 is using a AMD processor, they need every win they can get.

Boy that PS4 announcement came and went pretty fast... the vita had more excitement following it's announcement than the PS4 seems to have.

well its just a down sized ps3 to save money and cheap bits put in it. reason not much fuss is too many MS fanboys around for sony to release the full details its why they only showed the controller. if you look around people are wanting info off the xbox fanboys seeing what they like and dis like not on what ps fanboys like.

leaked specs of the new xbox are in pc mags but no real ones on sites which is strange

EB Games Australia has opened pre-orders for the PlayStation 4 at $899, which is about £600/€700/¥86,000. Australian prices tend to be quite a bit higher than international price points after currency conversion. For comparison, the 60GB PlayStation 3 originally launched at $999 in Australia, which is now worth about £670/€780/¥96,000, but the PS3 actually retailed at £425/€599/¥59,980 in respective territories. In any case, it’s just an estimate at this stage.

Speaking with CVG, SVP of worldwide studios, Michael Denny, said the firm plans to “do the right thing” by both consumers and developers.

“It’s a massively important issue and I understand why it’s one that keeps coming up and will keep coming up, because people want to know what the exact stance is,” he said. “Of course we’re mindful of what the game development community wants and what the wider industry issues are with those things.

“It’s not something that I feel I have any further announcement or comment to make on, other than to acknowledge with you that it’s a massively important issue and of course we are going to do the right thing.”

It was rumored before PS4′s reveal that it would block used games when a patent featuring such tech popped up in January.

The rumors, however, are more prevalent with the next Xbox console.
