Title: Witch one is better ICD2 or Pickit 3 ?
Post by: fevera1985 on January 29, 2014, 11:14:23 AM
Im buying a programmer to program PICs 12f683 and 12f1822.
Witch one would be better for that using windows 8 or xp.
I can get either one for same price and was wondering.
Thanks

Pickit3 has a couple more devices (I think?) and the only advantage of the ICD2 is being able to run debug in realtime if you insert the coding and hardware to do so (which I have not met anyone who has).

So I got my pickit 3. I had a quick question.
Well in order to have it working I had to mess with the software a bit to give power to the Socket board.
It asks me a question for voltage, I know that the PICs max voltage is 5.5v but what should I put it on the device.
The defult is 5v, should I change it to 3v or leave it for 5v.
Thanks

They have low voltage chips that aren't designed to take more than 3.3V. They are denoted with a 'L' in the name like 12LF1822. As long as you aren't trying to program a low voltage chip then 5V is fine.

Also go to their forums and download the PICKit3 Standalone software. It's much easier to use if you already have your hex file.

I got it. It actually wouldn't let me program a chip on 3.3v. I had to to switch it to 4.5v or 5v to able to program it.
