There are like 20/30 members on the first page of member list who have no posts.
I'm not a admin so cant do anything lol.
Just advising that its taking up so much space that could be used elsewhere. Like downgrading the server so cyber saves money.
Don't mean to sound like im bossing you admins/global mods (i'm a lowly local mod lol) around but its a fact.
Who agrees?
-
i think all those useless crappy accounts should be deleted, thats what i would do if i were an admin,it helps clean up the site.anyone with like under a certain amount of posts and hasnt been on in a while it should be deleted,it certainly would help cyber save money cuz of bandwith and such.all those noobs cluttering up the server...
-
yea i agree 4dm a try at my name at least delete that one please
-
most of the members on the member list dont even have 1 post so yeah i agree that they should be deleted
-
do any of you want to individually click on thousands of users and click 3 links on each to delete them, some that are potentially just not posting although they are registered because they want to view the site?
-
good point reaper...but still,if they havent been on in more than a certain amount of time then bye bye member...

do you want to individually go to every members account and see when the last time they logged in was, and then do all that crap LMAO
-
also if there not using there account then they arnt using any bandwidth its only active members that use bandwidth. plus the site is a majority text which uses very little bandwidth so considering you usually buy bandwidth by the GB the it would make very little difference and just be a pain in the ass to do. also i think we dont even use all the bandwidth we currently have so there is no need to worry guys but thanks for your concern

try probably 4 times that number or more... there are really probably only around 500 'active' members on the site and really probably only some of them are regulars... besides remember some people don't spend all there time online, some people use this site as a reference but never really post anything, and some people have extenuating circumstances that prevent them from spending much time online...
just think how pissed would you be if you weren't active for a while (for whatever reason) and we deleted your account, then you finally get some time to spend online and you come here to log in and you find that your account had been deleted... you wouldn't be very happy would you?
that's why the accounts don't get deleted... besides the higher member count looks better... and it looked kinda pathetic when the member count was like 50 (like it was when I joined)...

but what makes it look bad is that most of out members are just guppys, and that makes it look like the website is uninteresting if 4k-ish people dont want to post
thats what i think too

wat! this is spam and chat. you're supposed to be spamming and chatting.
sup guys, this is like a 4 year bump.
-
Just out of curiousity on this topic, the account ghost is taken by someone who has never logged in, would it be possibly for them to be deleted and my name changed to GhoSt?
-
couldn't you do that?
-
nah mods have forum content control, we have no access to forum changes and don't have html privileges, only a few of the admins do.

lol thats a uber mega bump!!!
@ ghost there is an option that should allow use to delete any profile that has not posted or activated thier account to free up the user name. I will look into that this weekend, for now, pm me the profile and I will take care of ths one for you.

hahaha I love how the people 4 years ago agreeing with deleting innactive accounts were all like 13 at the time.... obviously not very in tune with how a successful forum operates. A forum is judged by the number of members, although active members has some bearing on that judgement, the overall number of people who have been interested enough in AM to sign up for an account is the big one.
If someone wants a name that has been taken we can see about deleting and letting an active member take it over if certain criteria are met. Like if that innactive account is over a year innactive with less the 3 posts with email notification of deletion?
-
yea, i wouldnt delete anyone who has a post. just non posters and non activated, the forum maintnance software is set up to do such. but if they posted one time or activated thier account by email verification, I would have to manually delete them. dont matter to me though.
-
could always just rename them and send a PM to let them know they need to pick a new name, that way no need to delete them...
I never understood the 'don't bump old topics' mentality (though I understand it increases the topic count and makes the board appear more active), I mean really I'd rather have one long continuous topic about 1 thing than 20 small topics about the same thing, I mean really would you rather have a 10 page topic or 10 pages of 2 reply forum posts? but I digress, and since we're bumping a 4 year old topic anyway...
but what makes it look bad is that most of out members are just guppys, and that makes it look like the website is uninteresting if 4k-ish people dont want to post
yes most of the members are guppys and that could make the forum appear less interesting than it is, who the hell besides you idiots is actually gonna go through 650 pages of a member list to see how many posts are made by members? No one... If anyone even cares they're going to look at the number of members (not the brakdown of how many of them post and how often), more than anything they'll take a look at the general statistics page and no where on that page does it break down the member groups...
-
the maintnance software will do it automatically, I can set it to delete members with 0 posts of less than 5, any option we choose. again, I wouldnt delete any member with any posts.
Infact I was just putting the idea out there thinking deeply into it I wouldnt delete any of them as there are alot of members who have 0 posts but brows the forum without posting, alsounregistered members cant see the shoutbox, so people may register, never post just to see the shoutbox.
-
deleting members is bad business(barring unactivated accounts), unless you are running the uber leet exclusive forum its is unessacary. there are certain members that would have liked it that way when AM was making news every other week, but I am sure most if not all of them would not make that kind of suggestion today... in 2007 the active members had no idea why or how AM would achieve a member base of almost 20,000. we have seen similar suggestion threads over the years and it never ceases to amaze how quickly people remember when they were noobs.
As far a bumping topics, if you bump the topic and its relevant, you should not be scolded for it. One of the reasons bumping old topics is an issue is when someone posts in order to "bump" the topic to the top of the unread list (usually the topic author) it is usually irrellavant and you get a bunch of garbage conversations in what used to be a usefull thread. There is one other reason I can think of not to bump that pertains to a modding/repair site such as ours; If you bump an old topic seeking help it may be overlooked by members because the topic is over with and the are not as likely to revisit it.
I do notice the "dont bump old topics" phrase being used too liberally around here and little explanation is ever given to the poster by the moderator or member that replys with it. It is a case of trying to be helpful and enforce the rules because one is eager to be helpful. We dont have many moderation issues at AM so it is easy for mods and members to jump on the few infractions that occur.
bumping rules should be revisitted in code of conduct.
-
yeah... not gonna lie i do get bored now and then.
the thing that i DONT like is when someone bumps a 3 year old topic about a mod or repair with misinformation about said mod or repair.
-
WOAH. I got quoted from like 4 years ago :O
