Datel 4gb PSP hard drive
« on: May 29, 2008, 07:45:05 PM »
I'm sure most of us are familiar with this clunky thing, and I'm sure we're also fairly familiar with Electro's wizardry and installment of this thing internally.

However, 4gb seems a tad small for the loss of UMD and all that fiddling about inside your beloved PSP.
Which is why I want to take it one step further and either place a full blown laptop hard drive in (I'll make it fit!), or an ipod hard drive or something bigger than 4gb.

Yet I can't do this without first knowing how Datel hooked their hard drive up to their circuit board. I'm relying on those of you who have purchased and dissected these to answer this, and provide closeups of the HD pin layout since I have yet to actually purchase one of these.  And while I am aware electro has done a very nice job of showing us how to wire it up to the psp, he didn't give very specific shots of the hard drive itself, so please don't ask me to rely on those photo's  :winker:

Hopefully it'll be something standardized, like portable mp3 hard drives or (if we're real lucky) a compacted IDE format.

it's not a real hard drive it's just a compact flash card (we would have tried this already if it was a real hard drive)

Well so are ipod "hard drives".
Doesn't mean you can't put an actual HDD in place of it.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the Datel 4GB PSP Hard Drive doesn't allow you to use any media above 4GB

no ipod hard drives are hard drives nanos use flash memory on board and cannot be used in place of a hard drive.and the datel thing will not read a cf card over 4 gb it has been tried

Yes IPOD hard drives are real hard drives they are just 1.8" format

The datel system is just a translator to go from one memory stick to another

So, when you guys say that the datel thing doesn't support higher than 4gb, what do you mean?
If it's (apparently) just two 2gb sticks bundled together, whats to stop you from adding more in or just replacing it if you have to right electrical skills?
Can the board just physically not support more than 4gb or what?

I don't see how it would magically limit itself to 4gb.

Well if it's in the programming then some h4x0rzing should fix that
And if it's the circuitboard well then damn.

Oh well. Didn't think Datel would be an ass enough to limit their product to 4gb.

Actually the datel HD uses a Microdrive, which is a mini HD the size of a CF card.

But yeah 2 bad we can't use anything over 4GB or I would have used an iPod HD a long time ago.

Hard Drives for the PSP are treacherous lands and I would avoid going into it unless you know your qualified
