you need to be on atleast 3.52m33-4 before you can update to 3.90m33, then after that update to the latest 3.90m33-3

IT SAYS:
3.90 M33
--------

Requeriments:

- Installation requires a PSP with 3.52 M33-3 or higher.

Instructions

- Copy the UPDATE folder into /PSP/GAME/
- Get the 3.90 sony update from somewhere, and put it in same folder, with name "390.PBP".
Alternatively, you can let the installer to download for you via wifi.
- Run it, the update will be done by Sony updater. At the end when you are asked to reboot the
PSP pressing X or O, do it.

here check this site out, http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/616311 follow the guide and apply the 3.52m33-4 update, then run MUX 2.0 program and follow the instructions. i've done 20+ psp's with this guide and not a single problem when updating from 3.52m33-4 to any higher firmware. its pretty self explanatory but if you need more help just ask.

has it started the SCE updater? if so and you turn off the psp it will brick it, so u will need a pandora. if it hasn't, its still on the black screen with white writing im not sure.
