Want to buy a ps3 =S
« on: December 21, 2008, 04:15:23 PM »
I'm planning to buy a ps3 for a while and have some questions.
I was thinking about the 60gb model but if it really worth it? I've tried kijiji and craigslist but most of them are more expensive then a brand new 80gb with about 4 games

Is does the 80gb support ps2 and ps1? I've read somewhere the the MGS4 ps3 was the last one that came out that supported ps2/ps1

as for ports what does the new 80gb have? cause i dont plan on buying a wireless router for it and i heard sony took a lot of the usb ports and memory sticks out

Any suggestions?

Thanks in Advance

The 80gb ps3s that are sold in the stores do not support or play ps2 games.  They also only have 2 usb slots, and have no memory card slots (unlike the 60gb).  I believe however it does support ps1.

If your looking to buy a 80gb that will play ps2 games just check for the memory card slot and 4 usb ports and it will play ps2 games.  It's doesn't play as much ps2 games as the 60gb however

The 60gb and the 20gb both have the most compatibility for ps2 games.  The 60gb has the 4 usb ports/memory cards readers/built-in wifi.  The 20gb doesn't have the memory card readers or built in wifi.  You can get this however to add memory card readers to the 20gb

k then ill go look for 4usb ports

also whats the thing about turning a ps3 into a computer? how does it work out? and on future shop it said
The PS3 is also equipped with 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound capabilities. All you have to do is connect your console to a Dolby 7.1 capable audio/video receiver and boom you're assaulted with a wall of the sharpest, most refined sound imaginable.

Does that mean i can put 5.1-7.1 speakers on the ps3? or is there some attachment i have to buy

you can easily get one for under $300 if you don't mind waiting a while.  Just use my method

step 1: buy a broken ps3 for $150 or under on ebay (just make sure that the barcode is still on there and it hasn't suffered from abuse ie, not cared for, water damage)
step 2: call sony and ask for an out of warranty repair on your ps3 (don't tell them you got it from ebay, say you bought it from a friend).  You pay them $150 plus tax and they'll send you a box
step 3: pack the ps3 in the box and ship it to sony
step 4: wait for sony to fix and ship it back to you and bamm you have a 60gb ps3 for under $300

actually it will probably be closer to $350 with all the tax and shipping, but it's still worth it.  Just make sure that when you buy it that it hasn't suffered from water damage (they won't repair liquad damage) and that the barcode (not the warranty seal) is still on the system otherwise they won't take it.

Well i found one of kijiji
this is just the ps3 with no harddrive or cords, it has yellow light of death and can be used for parts or repair
its about $80.00 is it possible that sony will take care of it or will i need a hard drive?

does it matter which hdd? can i buy a cheap 20 put it in and then ask sony to repair?
or will i need the original 60hdd

Edit:
I dont plan on going through all that only if its my last option
I think some stores where i live dont restock on ps3s and i dont think they sold any
Is there a way to tell the difference between the old 80gb and the newer 80gb just by the box?
