Video Card Question
« on: January 11, 2009, 10:09:27 AM »
Okay so I have a 680i lt motherboard that is running a hd3870 graphics card. I am wanting to pump some more power into my systems so I started looking at new graphics cards. Then I came across the 4850x2 , this card seems to have pretty good specs and it has 4 dvi ports! My question is can I run this card on my motherboard. Somewhere I read that the 680i can not do crossfire but since this is a single card solution I was not sure.

Thanks for the sig dhuvrock2000

no you cant because the 680i chipset is made for nvidia SLI, not Crossfire, your best bet would be to buy an nVidia card. Personally i prefer nVidia of ATI 100%  :#1:

If it doesnt support crossfire, then buy it, and take out the 3870, and sell it

By the way, the new i7 motherboards, most of them support crossfire AND sli at the moment

He has a 680i, it's a socket 775, not a 1366.

As far as I know you can use that for the sheer reason it's a single card. Not sure though since it's the x2.
I recommend getting the new gtx295 if you want some serious power. The gtx295 blows the x2 out of the water.

Okay well I realise that it blows the other out of the water but would it be worth the price increase?

I'd wait a little for the price to down a little, but it's definitely a good card.
If you don't want the BEST card, go for a gtx260 or gtx280, the prices should be dropping soon.

Well i thought that the best card was the gtx295 due to the fact that it is 2 gtx260's on one card...

I said that...
And it's not 2 gtx260s, it's 2 280s with the combined specs of a 260 and 280.(I tihnk)

I said for price wait a few days and pick up a 260 or 280, hell, even a 9800gx2 should be fine for you unless you're doing intense gaming. The 9800gx2 dropped down into the $200s I believe.
For power get a 295, it's the best out there.

Its not that much faster than the GTX 280, some website did a review (forgot what one)  and it only got about 5-10 FPS better in games than the 280s

I think you don't have to spend that much money for vga,

get just enough vga for today's games

but if you are going to abuse your money, go for it

well it is not really abusing it. I think that it is future proofing. It just makes sure you can play the games for years and years to come.
