30 watt soldering iron ok?
« on: March 15, 2009, 08:32:29 PM »
I have a 30 watt soldering iron.  Will that be ok if I want to do LED mods?  I have never overheated something, and I can solder very small parts, quickly, but I want to know if its still too much power for LED work.

I have been hesitant to do any LED stuff, because I dont want to just burn up every LED I buy.  lol

I think you'll probably lose them more than burn them up, since they are so miniature.

30 watt is the highest you can use, otherwise all your leds will go up in flames...

So I'm gonna take it that a half second or less on each side of an LED is about the most time contact should be made with a 30 watt?

yes, verry good.

use a pincet on the led so the  pincet can conduct some of the heat

Just clip it straight onto the LED?

thats verry easy, let it warmup for some time.
than get a smd and put your soldering gun onto it, if it melts instanly your wattage is way to high.
if it takes like a sec. or 2 than its fine

this sounds strange but it works

Oh ok thanks, it doesn't have any model number or anything printed on it so I can't google it. Lol if I REALLY wanted to know I could buy one of those meters you plug into the wall first then plug your item into that to find out how much wattage it's using but it would just be cheaper to buy a new iron with a stand lol I didn't get one with mine so I had some extra wood laying around and some plumbing connectors XD LOL
