if you own what your installing it in why would it be illegal???

rental cars are chiped so they can find them.

some company's offer to register you serial number of your Ipod so that if you report it stolen and some one tries to sink it they can tell and attempt to track them

Something Like This?

Says it works on GSM/GPRS mobile networks using a SIM card. Kinda big to put in a laptop, but it could be made smaller.  Basically you call it and it sends gps coordinates to your phone.

probably someone who knows a bit about computers could do something with this. Still looks a bit bulky and would need some sort of program that you could access it remotely when it is on the net. It is just a gps logger that takes coordinates every so often and saves em.

Of course there is someone doing this sort of thing without hacking, learn more here and there is a list of computers that already have this support built in here:P

Yah there are some serious legal issues with using these type of things on people without their knowledge.  I suspect it falls under the same type of laws that make taping conversations without the other parties knowledge illegal.

I will provide the information, as long as know one admits or suggests that they will use the stuff illegally.  Probably it wont be long before this type of device gets played out in the court system as it is a very controversial technology.

like i said earlier why would it be illegal if you own the thing your putting it it. i think it would be commonsense that its not a good idea to use it a against some one. (even if our work phones have GPS so my boss can see ware we are)
