Lazy Mans Way to Cutting the UMD Ring
« on: December 10, 2009, 04:39:45 PM »
Well I just did this in a reasonable amount of time and it seemed quite easy.  It wasn't perfect but it seems decent for the time taken.

All that you really need to do is use a soldering iron and poke holes around the ring after removing the metal part.

Edit:  I wouldn't be so sure that this is "great" for the soldering iron...

Heres a pic of what mine looked like after I had already poked the holes with my soldering iron.

Then continuing to finish the circle...

Then poke the center out and sand it down.

And last is to cut up the ring and sand that down a little.
Giving me this as a end result.

I did actually break a small part of my umd door removing it with a butter knife so I'd recommend being quite careful on that part.

And, what do you think of my job?

And to add to this.  Another use of the soldering iron would be for attaching the transparent sheet on the inside.

It looks bad on the inside but who sees that part??

They see this:

Not bad at all, just wear a mask b/c of the burning plastic fumes, they can create problems down the line if exposed to too much.  Anyway, I first saw the picture and though you took a drill  to it, xD

not bad work, I personally believe in using the right tools for the job IE a hole saw, but thats just me, lol....like penny said if your going to do it like this, make sure you dont breath the fumes from the plastic which can be toxic.

matt, this also counts for the fumes of a soldering iron/hot glue/stripping wires with a torch (like i do..lol_ etc.

evrything is a bit toxic, it's ok to breathe it if you just dont do it whole day long.

This Is bad if you ask me. A dremal is much safer then this. You also Ruin a soldering iron tip.THe Right side of it looks lumpy. The fumes are bad to breath in. PLus, A dremal would do this way faster and a cleaner job in the end.
It looks ok, but I would throw it on my psp umd door. Sorry

I did this with my soldering iron the first time too. I now have a dremel to do this.

surely this isnt really a lazymans way of cutting the door out.

it'll take longer to melt it our with a soldering iron and then sanding the rought cut down...

then it would to drill it out with a hole saw and sand the edge smooth.

just my veiw..???

Sigs made by Ken and blazin from the AM Art team cheers guys.....

I also agree, It's a nice idea if you don't ahve a dremal, but you do run the risk of burning up the umd door too much, plus you end up with a messy solder tip.
