philips/lite-on laser issues
« on: February 25, 2010, 02:55:15 PM »
I have been repairing xboxs for some time now and this is the only prob i have not been able to figure out. i have an xbox with the open tray error.it has the phillips/lite-on drive dg-16d2s i opened the drive up and the laser was at the far end of travel (away from center) so i move it towards the center a little and it started working just fine but every one or two days it gets stuck back there and i cant figure out why. i lubed the screw and the tracks up and replaced the laser and still have the same problem.

i agree just replacing the drive would be easy but this the third dg-16d2s drive Ive seen with this prob. i swapped the other two out but im determined that this is fixable. none are modded. has no one else ever seen this problem??

no, this is odd. the laser has direct drive gears (the screw) so for it to get stuck, there could be two things, one, gears stripped, you would hear it grinding as it tried to retracet the lazer and it prolly woulnd funtion anymore. two, there is an enterfearance with the signal to retract the lazer, and this could be affected by lost of things.

well i shouldn't say stuck because it is not physically stuck. the drive just wont return it to center. like it is supposed to. the laser is able to move past the disc so it misses the disc. i have the case off the drive running it that way i can see what it is doing. i have an extra magnet so i can play disc with the cover off the case.  i put a 1/16 shim on the travel stop so the laser no longer misses the disc. seems to be working for now. i replace the plastic part with the teeth on it. i know nothing is worn out.

Ya i thought you meant it was getting completely stuck, well theres always a way to rig something lol.  Nothing wrong with rigging as long as its just a temp fix

yeah that works for a couple days but it sticks back there again. i looked at a few dif drives ms-28 and a Hitachi and the laser in them cant travel as far as the lite-on i adjusted the stop so it was about the same. and its been working pretty good.
