these are painted refurbished shells. not a big deal, It would be an awsmoe find if the shells were actually died instead of painted

yea, its common, I am sure they are nicely painted, but its still paint, and anyone who has painted a controller knows under practical everyday use the paint discolors and rubs off after time. the best way to tell is to look inside the shell, see how in the pic its just overspray inside the shell, you want it to be the same color throughout.

Does paint wear off if it has a nice few layers of clear coat protecting it? I recently purchased a few shells that I thought were going to be original color, but turned out to be painted. The job was done so well and the clear coat looked just like water. It was a real nice job. Will the clear wear off? It seems solid.
Thanks,
Jerry

eventually, the first spots to go will be the battery pack, and the back plate wwhere the high points from the triggers are this is due to setting it down on the floor or a table

Ya, I see that on all the controllers I have. That actually flattens out the plastic. I guess we need to make controllers with cool steel fitting to go in the wear spots. That would look pretty cool for a themed controller actually I think I will make something. If I do I will post it on here.

they could just be cheaply cast molds of original shells the way they make psp cases for DX.  Not sure, but what looks like crappy paint might just be a crappy poorly finished mold.

I will get a couple with my next order

you can have the option to buy this if you want to have a custom paint job on your controller..  this can be a practice or you can use this if you dont want to mess your original shells.
