Impotant question about broken solder points
« on: December 24, 2010, 09:33:34 PM »
Ok I have an xbox 360 power supply plug it in its red so I took it apart what a  muder :censored: any how got it apart  after pounding on the case here and there finally poped part, first of all there was something rattling around in there before i pulled it apart or beat on it, come to find out all the blades on the fan but 1 of them had fallen off.

Ok heres my question got to the problem a capacitor has come lose frome the board and the solder joints are peeled off the board . Is there a way to Fix it ? the capacitor is good it just broke lose from the pcb .

best and easy way to fix ? or just through it out?

i dont know if you can see it that well in pic, for a $200 camera and 5x zoom it takes  :censored: pictures up close on small stuff, great if you want to take a pic of the west cost from the east coast or vise versa

right i personally did this problem by soldering to the trace so just scrape the trace the green bit where the copper goes to the solder joint flux it and solder the cap straight on that

make sure you solder the capacitor the right way round is with personal experense if you solder them the wrong way round  (bacwards) it explodes

:)

EDIT(to make my post actually useful):

Making mistakes is probably one of the top learning tools, teaching is another learning tool used too.

working with caps:
discharge them with a resistor before servicing
check polarity
when replacing check voltage rating
don't touch the top metal part of the cap!
when it looks blown up check for other areas burnt

I read somewhere that if your not making mistakes, your not learning or If you make a mistake then you learned something......whats the worst that can happen.....snap crackle pop.... I marked which way it is so hopefully it was right the first time

thanks fooks for safety first , something alot dont consider,

another top tip dont look over it when mistake is made as its fun to watch it explode but the metal bit on top shoots out like its from a gun  :dribble:

Well i got up this morning, and had to remove some components to get to the other side of the cap, and the boards in pretty bad shape not much of a trace to solder to, so I am going to try and work on it later tonight and hope all goes well, I also have to find a replacement fan also so the power supply is usefull

thanks again for your help

Ok update. i got the capacitor soldered back in what a mudder  :censored:
no room, any how thought it was all good even felt proud that i got it soldered back in, turn it on and flashes red, and added another fan just to make sure that it was working and still nothing, board where the capacitor was at is cracked in half think i mentioned that before didnt think it would be a problem looked futher and it bad. so went to the circler file after i cut the cord off of it, thanks everyone, .

OH and the capacitor didnt blow up :)
