Google Buys SageTV... Google TV with DVR on the way?
« on: June 20, 2011, 01:05:14 PM »

Google has acquired SageTV, for an undisclosed sum. SageTV develops software for DVRs and home-theater PCs.

SageTV has been developing its software since 2002. The platform allows people to record live television, including full seasons, thanks to support for antenna TV, cable, and satellite. A place-shifting feature lets people start watching a show on one device, such as their PC or Mac, and continue watching it elsewhere, including on mobile devices or even in the car.

What Google plans to do with the SageTV Program is still up for speculation, one possibility is that the service will be integrated into Google TV. That platform, which launched last year, allows people to search all their TV content, as well as access streaming services, such as Netflix and Pandora. However, not everyone is convinced that SageTV will be coming to Google TV.

"I consider it impossible that Google acquired SageTV so they could add native DVR capabilities to Google TV," Rakesh Agrawal, founder of SnapStream, a service that directly competed with SageTV before transitioning to "TV search," said in a blog post "Remember, Google already manages the program guide, channel changing, and even automating your native DVR."

In announcing the acquisition over the weekend, SageTV was coy about its future, saying that its "ideas will reach an even larger audience of users worldwide on many different products, platforms, and services."

Google had not said anything at this point

I for one think it would be a good move for Google to integrate this into there Google TV.  I have been using SageTV on my Shuttle DVR for years now and it is a far better experience than anything I've seen from any of the Major PVR company's out there.

What do you think?

I think Google is slowly wrapping their fingers around the net to collect data about every person who uses their service. pros would be to improve their services. cons would be the private info gets stolen or used against you.

google adsense is scary because it checks ur browsing history. i did an experiment and i googled mountain dew for a week straight twice a day and i started getting vitiman water/pepsi ads on youtube like crazy, and the week after that i was working on a website... googled up CSS tutorials everyday and i started getting host gator ads... Now they're gonna target you by what crap you watch on TV when you're veggin out on the couch. =P
