Is this possible?
« on: September 01, 2011, 01:45:55 AM »
Strange mod i know but im wondering if the psp would be able to connect to three psp screens instead of just one if they were all connected in parallel. The reason is, if it is possible i will be mounting two screens for monitors for the car, so i can have an in car entertainment system without splashing loads of cash on expensive equiptment. I have a psp but not the extra screens, if anyone could give it a go if they have spare time and supplies, it would be much appretiated.

I don't know I might be possible but you might need a external power supply for your extra screens
The soldering would probably be advanced

EDIT I am not sure graphics card could cause problems but doesn't the psp have a socket which you can plug into your tv?

i intend on using an old beat up psp as an entertainment centre for kids in the car, so i would have the psp incorperated into my dash with two screens running to the headrest, means i can put there films onto card and play on psp. would save 200 quid on a system, i can already plug speakers into car via the headphone socket on psp and into my sound system in the car, as for the power supply all i need to do take it from the battery to a transformer to change it to the screen supply, i just wasnt sure if the graphics controller on the psp was good enough to put out to 3 screens instead of one? any more thoughts?

yeah this can be done but you have to do lots of soldering on the screen's ribbon cable and backlight wires.

Where is the battery in your car placed under the bonet or like mine under a seat?

If you can you could have the wires run under the cars carpet.

Also you will need a power inverter (which are quite expensive) and power inverter needs to be kept ventilated

There are only a few issues I would worry about -

I don't think you can run a power inverter of the 12v socket in your car ( I may be wrong)
and if so I don't know how you would get the power directly from the battery, as you have another wire problem

This could end up being a costly mod so check how much you think it will cost

an inverter changes from dc to ac or ac to dc, which yes are costly but a car battery is dc anyway, a psp battery also dc, so all i need to do is change the voltage from 12v to 5v using a transformer, and using resistors to reduce the current down to what the psp requires, all this is easily done, its an austin mini so battery in boot, im doing a complete rebuild so i thot this would make an exellent addition to a custom dash board. if i get it working i might just end up using 5 screens and put two in the sun visors at front lol. dont know if i would be wanting to watch the kids stuff nor would i want to be watching it as i drove lol but would just look cool. think i will just give it a bash if i get two donor screens for cheap, wish i kept my old psp that i fried the motherboard, screen would have come in handy. thanks for advice guys, if any one has any screens or wants to try this, give me a pm and let me know how its going, i will try upload some pics when i get started on this.

Good Luck
Don't trash your car ;)

Maybe if you got one of those portable dvd players and used that as a screen broken ones go pretty cheap on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Portable-DVD-CD-player-2-x-7-screens-/330607537395?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item4cf9beacf3#ht_500wt_951

You could gt this if you ar quick ;)

Easy way to have multiple screens of the same image is a video amp / multiplier. I have 4 screens in  my Denali.  If you use a psp 2000 and the video out cable w custom fw and irshell you can output all your video(including games) from your psp to the amp through a composite connection. The amp then outputs multiple amplified video signals. Check crutchfield for the video amp, Its one place i know has it. But i am sure with a lil searching you can find it.

instead of using a transformer you must use a voltage regulator. They are as easy to wire up. Radioshack sells 5v regulators called the 7805

Transformers are for AC

Voltage Regulators are for DC
