Anonymous will shut down to protest SOPA

Hacking group Anonymous will carry out a 12-hour communication blackout in protest of SOPA, reports The Inquirer.

This is scheduled to take place on January 18 from 8 AM to 8 PM, but we're not too sure how this helps their crusade against SOPA -- they have such a reputation for making trouble that some people would probably be relieved to see them take a day off.

Reddit has similar blackout plans in order to increase awareness about the controversial legislation, and the tactic even got the attention of Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales.

"Were Wikipedia to consider a similar measure, it might make sense to do so at the same time, to increase impact,"

he wrote in a statement on his personal page.

Maybe they release a virus and start destroying the Internet and then wait until the US beg them to stop. But that is just my evil side imagining, but I think there could be a twist.

I can't wait until Google jumps on the bandwagon to do this. Imagine if Google were down for a day leaving the message about SOPA and what you could do about it. The local "representatives" or whatever would have their hands full because millions of people would be calling up or whatever protesting it lol.

If Google shut down ALL there services it would cause chaos!
-Loads of Google websites
- Search engine itself
- Google Phone

Though they probably keep a pretty airtight business.

edit: I agree Google should just take an unscheduled day off to show SOPA what would happen if the internet was censored.

Google is actually doing something like that now, they are blocking yahoo answers' search results... such a pain in the ass!!!

yeah ive noticed alot of problems/changes to google in the last few hours not sure why but google know if they do stand up and shut down for a few hours or a day they will lose alot of money

sigh* what people  dont understand yea they loose money but gain ten times due to the stance they took upon sopa  apparrbtly  it worked for wiki moving there domains off godaddy as they were offered a large sum of money to do so and (while i cant confirm but hace read it on comments on giz and engadget ) removed the banner on the top of the wiki pages and now are gearing up votes to go black for a day abd so is reddit on the 18th they are going black for a day

you have to admit, SOPA is destroying what alot of us love about the internet, why censor the internet, it was made for this. I'm all for anon, I'll back them up any way possible

That really wouldn't serve much of a point simply because probably about 99% of the users hear on acidmods already know about SOPA.
