N3RDY's XB1 3DS spinback controller
« on: December 21, 2013, 12:09:07 PM »
Changed the direction of the original build plans. Here is the new build plan:

................3DS slider in place of directional pad...............
................RF chip modes linked to 3DS slider.................
................minimapper chip install with 3.5mm external orange led...............
................Red 0603 smd LED guide install in place of stock white................

The below link specifies my work log. Special thanks to RDC as well. He has helped me by sharing his vast knowledge and board scans! Without his help I wouldn't be able to make this build possible. Hope you all like my build. I'll be happy If I can make it in at least 3rd place LOL.

Ready to begin my mod off. I have 2/3 of my parts in right now and as of today I will begin my build. I have my stock XB1 controller in the top picture next to my AM account. The picture below shows my parts as of now that I will be installing. I will update my pictures of my progress in this second post all through the whole build till I post my video. Hope u guys and gals like my build!

Update. Going to take a little different approach. Im just going to do stock black controller with RF chip, 3DS slider & 4 tact re-mapable suff style paddles.  The last 3 days I've done a little bit of work. I have the RF chip installed and the 3DS slider almost done. Ive tested the slider and everything works fine. I now have to install the re mapper chip! I scratched the PS3 style leds as there is not enough room so Im doing stock white led, the RF chip wiil be yellow that pulses when activated . So It will be like white led on all the time with a added yellow led pulse. The re mapper will be a wild led color, I say wild as Im using some left over 0603 led I.D.K what color it is LOL. Here are some pics of my progress and I'll keep updating till completion!

Spent a little time today and installed my minimapper chip. All I need to do now is drill out my tact holes in the shell install the tacts to the minimapper and solder 4 wires to the chip to the 3DS slider. Still need to add paddle switches for the tacts but besides this my build is almost complete!

Update 1/4/14: After testing my controller I found that my LB wasent working anymore  I used my second XB1 controller to check where the LB was going bad. The second U shaped board wasent the problem. Somewhere down the line the actual LB tact craped out on me. I checked it for any breaks in the pin that might of happened from pulling out the top board. From what I can see there was nothing wrong with the LB tact. I even tried linking the LB trace to one of the top pins on the LB tact and that dident work as well. Looks like some gremlins got in my controller LOL. So long story short I had to disassemble EVERYTHING buy a new controller and start over   . Here are some updated pics of the re swap. I have tested everything and it all is in working condition now. Now I need to install the tact switches for the minimapper to test that install out. Once this is done my controller should be just about as good as finished. Oh yea I changed the LED from white to red on this new controller. Im going with a 3.5mm orange Led for the mini mapper.

Update 1/5/14. So I have pretty much all my mods installed and all are working great. Today I installed large tac buttons on the back of the XB1 controller shell. I opted out on paddles as i just wanted more surface area than what the standard tac switch could provide. here is a pic of the tac switches Im going with.

Do to the large size of these I had to re position my chips around.

I incorperated a pink Ps3 style led for the minimapper using a 5mm led and ps3 stle light.

Im almost completed with my build but i need to do some modifications to the top shell to mask the hole where the 3DS slider rest. I lack any knowledge in this area but im making slow progress with this. All in all this has been a very frustrating build. There is a lot that the photos dont show. I had to take a small flat head screwdriver and pop of the metal connections on the D pad to make room for the 3ds slider. I had to re- start my whole build due to a faulty LB issue. After the tactical buttons I had to re position my RF chip and 3ds chip. I also had to run to wires to every connection on the board. The RF chip used every connection as the minimapper did as well. some areas I had to run 3 wires off one connection for the 3ds slider to be incorporated. The spacing is tight for everything I have crammed in. I had to cut out the middle screw case support to run my ps3 style led to the top of the XB1 shell. Basically its been a nightmare but I have learned a whole lot through all of this. If I had to do It a second time I know I could brease through it. When I finish my shell modifications for my 3ds slider I post my completed video of my controller in working order. Hope u guys and gals like it!

Update: 1/19/14

I have decided to color my shell orange/black also I have completed my build. This is my first ever paint job so be polite as im a total noob at painting. Everything came out good for the most part. I forgot to tape the inside of where the A,B,X,Y buttons go and I had to sand out the rims of the holes and the paint chipped a little around the holes. I touched them up the best i could but its still a little noticeable and I accidentally bumped it when it was wet leaving a paint impression above the Y button. I used a 1/8 in washer to mask the hole I had to cut in the shell for the 3DS slider to fit. I painted it and welded it to the shell using crazy glue. It is a little ghetto but I lack shell modding experience. I also covered the 3DS slider stick with a rubber grip off a ghetto led flashlight LOL. Ill load up pics of my completed product below. Ill post my video of it in full operation under this thread!

That orange paint job came out looking damn fine. That internal rats-nest though, a true modder here .
Your controller is looking great.

Thanks. If I had to do it all over I could make it way more clean. I had to trial and error all through this build. Only had weekends to work on it and I'm pretty much in the dog house with my girlfriend. Not enough her time lol. Anyway I'm having trouble posting my vid up. My PC USB ports are being restarted and my cell phone is no help. I'll get it posted soon.
