I'd seriously stay with the 3000 housing, but if you really can't, I'm positive you can do it. And I'm sure the problem had to do with placement of the analog stick, the original stick had 4 metal pads that had a rubber insert with copper traces going through it that touched the board, the new 3000 has an analog stick with a ribbon cable, so I am pretty sure they are in different places. Like I said, to make the 3000 analog stick fit, you are probably going to have to sand away some things, or use an epoxy and fill places to make it high enough, I've never done this myself.
