Using an Archos AV500 with PSP or Card readers!
« on: August 17, 2008, 04:25:32 PM »
Archos AV500 uses it's Mini A USB host port that is compatible with USB cameras, USB card readers or USB hard drives.
There are other PMP (Portable Media Players) that have the same feature and can do this.

Can be used with card readers:

Or simply with PSP via Mini B USB cable and a Female to Mini A adapter:

I used a Female to Mini B adapter:

I couldn't find a cheap Female to Mini A adapter so I just made my own.
Simply by removing some of the bottom metal:

And it's a perfect fit:

Then using a SD USB card reader with a SD to Micro SD adapter:

SD card reader plugs into female to Mini A adapter:

And then into the Archos:

1.Then with the built in Browser all you do is navigate to the file you want.
2.Navigate to the folder for the file to copy and hit copy:

The file is copying:

im pretty sure its so you can copy files from a usb hard drive or any other memory card with the use of the usb card reader to your psp without using a pc.

Well simply put I can have extra 30GB of PSP stuff with me at anytime.
All I need to do is transfer it.

Does that answer your question?

im pretty sure its so you can copy files from a usb hard drive or any other memory card with the use of the usb card reader without using a pc.
You got it.
No need for a PC on a long trip.   :w00t:

It was $300 before,  but I got mine for half that on eBay a few months ago.
There is also a 100GB model.  :w00t:

Instead of carrying a USB 2 Go hard drive by itself
he can carry one that plays movies also.

And MUSIC.  :yess:

This reminds me do any of you think some sort of a USB host could be used between my Archos and the PSP via IR Shell or some other app?

Age Old question:

We are working on a usb host so that you can play the games directly from
the hard drive in your Archos 500.

By the Way I have one of these also.

The xm4 project once I have the usb daughter board done will act as the host using irshell
between the PSP and your Archos running in mass storage mode. The advantage with
the Archos is with the built in battery you can run as storage for the PSP for about 3 hours.

That's great.

How hard is it to make?
Will you be posting a tutorial?

Already posted the NSLU2 version and all the tutorials on how to build it.

When my new USB 2.0 daughter board is completed ( 2 Months )
I will transfer all the code that works over to the xm4 board that
fits in the UMD drive bay

I was actually referring to your xm4 project and not the NSLU2.

Since your saying 2 months I'm guessing this is a really hard mod to do.

Or you just don't have the time?

Project is not really that bad.

I am designing the PCB right now

Then the turn around time for the PCB is 3 weeks

Then assemble and test make any changes and
make a second run of boards that have no jumpers

So there is about 6 weeks in turn around time

And the cost for the protype boards are around 300 - 400 each run

I would guess they would be a lot less because he will probably mass produce them

That price is for the tooling and setup charges.

They have to take my feed through pattern and program it into
a cnc drill machine.

The have to take my solder mask and create the mask

The boards only cost me $2.00 each even though I am only getting 10 of them
in the first run.

Then I will build two units for testing and check out the PC board layout.

Implement the drivers and make the first units work.

Then I have to make any corrections to the boards so they work
without mods and jumpers.

Then it will cost another $300 to $400 for tooling and setup to
get 50 proto boards.

The boards will be less than $1.50 each in production.

The cost with components will be under $10.00 in small quantities.

If I understand you correctly, you will be able to make these for people for $10 each?   :w00t:

My cost to make them in quantity will be around $10 at the factory in China. I will have other costs to get them
here and packaging and documentation so they should sell for about $35 to $40.

The two boards the USB and xm4 will be around $100 together
