Removable extended wifi antenna PROJECT
« on: January 10, 2008, 05:10:25 PM »
Well i got inspired by the thread extended wifi antenna and this is what I thought. I could maybe use the screws next to the usb port which are basically useless to screw the antenna in them. I took the antenna off a RC helicopter controller and its a 5 piece expendable one that most RC controllers use and it fits into the psp screw perfectly.
So my plan is to solder a wire from the end of the wifi antenna (under the powerboard) )(see the pic)

to the place where the screw goes in (sse da pic)

This is how the antenna would be screwed in:

And the psp would look like this with the antenna screwed in:

Now I dont see a reason why this should not work or? But i have 2 difficulties I face.
1. The whole LCD support will become a part of the antenna. Do u think this will result in a short or something?
2. The LCD support will be soldered to the antenna so i wont be able to remove it but i will still think about that.

Plzzz any sugestions, possible diffuclties or your opinions are welcome since I am still kinda noob with the psp hardware but i am trying to learn :yess:

I think this should work, but estetically will be a mess ...

ya need to get the female end from the RC car this will allow you to connect and disconnect it. or have a wire stick up in the screw hole.

I honestly don't think it would work because the entire lcd metal back frame works as ground, feeding ground throught out the entire psp internal guts. Besides, the long black wire that goes from one side of the psp to the other is actually an internal wifi antena. Your idea would work by cutting or separating the metal piece where the external antena screws into, away from the lcd back frame. Only then, is when you could go ahead and make your wire connections. Not bad of an idea.

Im sitting in class now, and we are learning about antennas (mostly TV/Radio) and your antenna needs to be as long as half a λ (Lambda)

you figure out how long lambda is by this actuation

λ=c/f

c is the light speed. 300 000 000 meter per second
f is the frequency of your signal, 2 400 000 000 hz

then lambda is 0,125 meters and half a lambda is 0,0625 meters.

so your antenna needs to be 6,25cm

but you could of course have reflectors, like the UHF, find out more about antennas here

It is possible. You can dremel out the screw, isolate it by gluing it back in with JB Weld, and then hook your wire up. The JB Weld will keep it perfectly in place, the way I'd do it is cut in a V shape around the screw, doing one side then filling the hole with JB, then cut the other half of the V once the JB has dried and fill the gap left. That's your best bet, but I'd go for something with less gravitational torque. One that curved around the back of the PSP or something.

read my post above.. this antenna is to long to receive Wi-Fi at a good rate...
the best length of a Wi-Fi antenna is 6.25cm, any longer and it would rather receive lower frequency signal.

do i really need to do that?? i thought the longer the antenna is the better the signal would be
Slimby: thx a lot for the idea of how to isolate it from the rest of the LCD support, i will do it like that

My plan count with origo wifi antena like on router or PCI card

does anyone have an idea of how i could do it that i can still remove the lcd support after this mod? because its going to be soldered to the internal antenna

u might just want to put it in the left
get a 90 degree antiena
and wire it up there

i mean just drill a small hole in the psp case and then get a tap and die set and make the threads for the hole and screw in the intena

have the hole coverd in some sorta conductive glue or like the inside of a flashlight where the metal touches so when u screw it in theres a connectivity...

umm
yea thats all i have right noi might think about doing this sometime
its not very hard
i have everything i need in my garage

yes the dipole of this antenna is at perfect length

(dipole is the actual main part of the antenna)

I like the idea.  It would probably work too.  I might try it if you find that it actually increases signal reception.  You would probably have to devise a to actually test if your signal is improve tho.

What is the diameter of the intena you may be able to get it to set inside most of the ways in the psp and extend it out when needed like the old radios. I have an intena from a linksys that was soldered direct to the board unlike the newer one i have that screws on but i was going to mount it on the memory stick side and it would fold down to the back of the psp and then twist up when needed. their is a book i think called PSP Hacks or PSP hacking and in it it has the extended network intena mod.

well u can just go to connection information or however its called and it shows u how strong is the signal, then u screw in the antenna and see if it inscreases

i remember back when i did one of these over a year ago i showed it to bnc not sure where the pics are tho didnt think the reaction would be this big o.O and yes it will work you just need to separate it from the cage mine worked great i used the wifi antenna of a linksys usb wireless network adaptor and i tested at my grandmas house(over a block away)and still got 100% i loved it  :victory: good luck

This would be totally possible, you could desolder the internal wire and stick it into a female connector and dremel a place out for the antennae to connect to the female connector.

yer good idea to seperate the joint from the metal bracing as it will do nothing but put up resistince.   Does anyone know what the Impedenc of the psp's wifi antenna input is (in ohms). I would be thankful if someone knew.
