Repainting Cars in GIMP
« on: March 28, 2009, 01:33:38 AM »
OK, so quite a few people have been doing this thing where they repaint cars, and I thought it would be good if there were a tutorial to help people out, and avoid unnecessary  questions being asked.

This tutorial can transform this:

To this:

What You Need

GIMP- a free program very similar to Photoshop. Get the latest version at http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

If it helps, the .xcf file of what we're going to be doing in the tutorial (http://pspupgrade.webs.com/Repainting%20Car%20Guide/Rolls%20Royce%20Painted.xcf)

I'm using the picture of a Rolls Royce car. Get it from http://pspupgrade.webs.com/Repainting%20Car%20Guide/Unpainted%20Rolls.jpg

So, let's get started.

1) Open up the picture of the car in GIMP:

2) Get the Layers window opened (SHIFT+L), and click the "duplicate layer" button.

3) Select the "colours" toolbar and click on "colourise"

4) Drag the hue button until you get the colour you want. I'm using a red today :)

5) Next, right click on the duplicated layer, and click "add layer mask"

6) Select the "White (full opacity)" option, and click OK.

7) Now use the Paintbrush tool and paint on the parts that you want to return to original colour, such as the windows, grilles and background. Remember to use the rubber tool if you make a mistake somewhere; those tiny inaccurate places are what ruin an image.

8) I also regularly use the polygon and fill tools combined for windows etc. This saves a lot of time and is more accurate.

9) And now, after a few minutes of using the paintbrush, polygon and rubber tools, you're left with this:

And now here's our newly painted Rolls Royce:

You can also make a duplicate layer of the original, and put a black full transparency mask onto that, if you want. Then it's quite easy to pull out results like this:

Anyway, that's it. Hope it helped some people out there  :victory:
It's the basics that bring us down.
