lcd screens/ipod questions

I just got a busted ipod with a cracked screen.. I accidentally opened up the screen and touched the liquidy stuff in it. Is that stuff toxic or anything? Also, can I just throw them out, or should I dispose of them some other way?

Last question, which isn't really related to lcd screens, but to the busted ipod... I plugged it in, and it turns on, but the ipod was in the hands of my friends, and let's just say technologically impaired people + busted electronics = bad... First music stopped playing, so he started throwing it against a wall and the ground... After it busted open, he came up and asked me how much I thought it'd be worth... I was like uh, 10 bucks? Anyway we basically ended up ripping out all the ribbon cables and all, and some random other foamy parts were ripped out. After that, the guy just offered it to me for 10 bucks... So I bought it, figuring I could part it out or maybe even fix it. So how much you guys think this would be worth? It turns on, but has a cracked lcd, lost all the ribbon cables that aren't physically connected to a component at atleast one end, has no headphone jack, has a bent backplate, and a few foam protective cushioning pieces missing. I'm thinking I could get like atleast 20 out of it? The mobo seems good, atleast.

LCD: $25-30
Headphone jack: $15
Backplate: $20
Clickwheel(since ribbon != intact): $15

Seems you can fix that up cheaply.

like an ipod video 5th gen. Not quite sure... 80gb, black. The clickwheel actually works! :D It's just random ribbon cables that have been taken out, such as the one connecting the HDD to the mobo :( I can't test it unless I get a new one.

Ok, the cable only costs like $10 anyways.

Get a cable, test the HDD out, and if everything's good then fix it up.

cool thanks. Now about the toxicness of the lcd liquid...

Edit: I think this is a 5th gen. A classic has an aluminum frontplate, but this has that flat feeling black that collects fingerprints, plus that really easily scratchable backplate.

Edit again: Any good places to buy ipod parts from?

Bump... I gotta know how dangerous lcd screens are and how I should dispose of them. currently I have a cracked lcd screen sitting in a plastic bag in my room >.>


I seperated the black film thingy from the back, and then there's this clear liqudiy stuff, and the screen is cracked. Not sure what the clear stuff is...

i don't think it is toxic but it most definitely is not  environment friendly. Put it in a plastic bag and dispose it safely. Don't just dump it out the window :) also i think ifixit.com stocks ipod parts. Hope that help :)

nope not about the quality but more about their service and delivery times, but i dunno coz i haven't ordered from them. Oh yeah ,i fully agree those backplates scratch as if they were rubbed with sandpaper !!! :)

lol... Alright thanks guys. Not sure if I even want to invest like 50 bucks for all the new parts to fix it, seeing as i don't even know if the HDD works, nor the mobo. It turns on, but other than that I'm not sure if anything works. I suppose I'll buy a new HDD cable to test it, and if that works, and I can see it in itunes, then maybe I'll buy the rest of the parts.
