i7 overheat problem

Hey guys,

Sorry I haven't been on in a while...stupid school taking over (exams etc...) but they're all finished so now I got time for everything :D

Anyway...my problem started a few weeks back, when my i7 920 hit 80 degrees Celsius from just running Firefox...THAT'S IT I had nothing else open. All I had open was 3 tabs of myspace. Now I think that is the problem because whenever it happened Firefox was using 300K of memory and CPU was under 100% load. I'm using 64 bit and the browser is 32 bit..if that makes a diff...Now to test if it was stable I downloaded Prime 95 to see if it would overheat. It has NOT been overclocked it is still on 2.66Ghz....it ran for 2 minutes and hit 78 degrees then I stopped the test. WTF!

What should I do ?

plausible

-that you have a virus or some type of mal ware that your detection software is not detecting because it has been affected

-your cpu cooler is not atatched correctly or there is an issue with your thermal paste

more likely

its dying it could be a bad chip and its going south on you.

Yeah, I'd remove the CPU heatsink and clean off the thermal grease off the sink and CPU, then re apply grease to both and attach them again.  I'm running on an Extreme and it never goes that high....o.0'

Could be insufficient air circulation in your case as well, is your wiring neat/semi-neat and organized?  Also, what other hardware are you running?

I have a TT armor+ MX case....9800GTX + GPU, DDR3 1600Mhz, Asus P6T deluxe mobo, 850W PSU and i7 920 (stock cooling). I didn't put the case together...the place where I bought the comp from did. I don't think its a virus coz I've scanned the comp with Norton 360 V2 and Spybot and nothing...

Take it back to the store then if it's under warranty or w/e....they should sort it out for you

Try to turn off Hyper Threading. It helps a lot if you have a hot i7.
