Mic Port Universal Mixer
« on: January 29, 2010, 03:45:59 PM »
Astro is a Freaking sexy Mic Headset for the xbox360 its used at MLG tournaments because of its VoIP capabilities to bypass system lagg for your voice. The Astro has a Mixer feature where you can listen to your favorite MP3's while playing a game or just lobby camping with your buddies.

I was going to come up with a Mixer that[s the size of a Tic Tac box with a Dial Switch just like Astro's but with color changing LEDs ether to the audio or color changing modes.

Does anyone have any ideas to make this compatible for a PS3 to make it more appealing to everyone else?

quite simple,you just need to split the speaker input into two,here's a simple diagram I whipped up ;

The values of the potentiometers, transistors, boost voltage etc. vary on the operating voltage of the headphones you're using, you'll have to work the out for yourself, but all in all it's quite a simple project.
Hope I helped,
Ryan.

Are the transistors MOSFET? or FET?

Thanks for the good idea.

I will assume they are NPN plus I don't think the impedance of the inputs will match if its just paralleled. Think about it if you have two signals into one speaker and then you amplify only the current with a Transistor your shooting yourself in the foot to trying to get signals to mix.

I'll mess with this since im bored =D.

so yeah later time to get things crakin.

EDIT:

** we need a power TIP MOSFET transistor to mix the signals

EDIT2: I have experimented with this a bit and found out if you get the right type of speakers its not an issue to amplify it a lot.

standard npn transistors

didn't think of adding in a mosfet, the design I came up with there would work but it wouldn't be nearly as smooth as if a mosfet was used

I am still calculating and testing. A final design will come soon.

When its all done i'll post my nerd math with the schematic and parts list with a few photos. Not ATM though tonight i got a few mods need finished. top priority to deliver to the post office.

::Bump Ok i got a schematic and im going to post it soon just let me finish testing then this project can become open source.

Maybe this might help. Splits 2.5 jack input into in/out 3.5mm jack.. Maybe you could find a way to internalize it.

And also this.

maybe volum mute could simply be put next to the connector?

I want to externalize it because the potentiometer i have is very sensitive, rather large, its sexy looking. I also want this to work for any other headsets besides Xbox360 or PS3... which is why its external.

(havent worked on this for a full 5 days)
