PSP SLIM UMD SPEAKER MOD
« on: May 09, 2010, 08:28:12 PM »
i know a lot of this topics have been posted.
and Ive searched everywhere for a tut.
the search function proved quite futile since the tuts were in bits of pieces.
i need help on "installing" a speaker in the umd door of the psp slim.

here is what Ive managed to gather:

i read that you can just get a sizeable speaker to fit the umd door and just glue it in place.

and then solder +/- of the new speaker to either the +/- of the original internal speaker or direct to mobo.

I'm not sure what's the difference.

and do i need resistors?

i haven't checked out what speaker I'm gonna buy so i cant get the exact specs atm.

*I'm quite a noob at hard-modding.
the only mod Ive done is hooking up colored leds to the L/R triggers and around the PSP Logo on the umd door.

you dont need resistors, any speaker should work like from a kids toy or pocket radio, whatever, and "noob" you did the leds that is hard for me, speaker mod is very easy,

yeah thats right. wire it to the speakers. they're very heat sensitive tho. tap it with the soldering iron, rather than leaving the iron, because they're easy to fry

If you directly solder to the mobo contacts you won't have to worry about frying the speakers

I have heated up the speakers a lot by trying to soldering to them and they still work fine.

im not sure what to do right now.
its either soldering it to the original speakers or mobo.
im not really afraid of frying the original speaker(since its too "loud" already)
but my main concern is if i solder it directly to the mobo, would the speaker shut up when i connect a headset to the psp. basically, i wouldnt want my songs exploding in a library for example.

im getting the speakers as i type so im gonna try my best since its my first mod on a slim.

If you solder where the speaker contacts the mobo, then the umd speaker will shut off when you put headphones in.
It doesn't matter where you solder to really.

You can solder to either motherboard contacts or speaker itself. It will work either way. If you plug in earphones, it will shut off.

so it doesnt matter where i solder it to?
as long as its there's a contact with the original speaker?
i'll put that in mind.

still looking for speakers..my country sucks(Singapore)
hard to find good quality "standalone" speaker.
wish there was a radioshack-look-a-like or something here..

thanks for all your help guys.
really appreciate it.

lol.
i am actually looking for stuff lying around.
the only speaker i found seems to big although i never checked thoroughly. probably be checking it out when i get home. its a speaker for an old cd player. hopefully i get the mod done asap.
the suspense is killing me.

Post Merge: May 13, 2010, 03:22:29 AM
oh yea. i forgot to ask.
what must be the exact width of the speaker?
i measured that it should roughly be 5mm
but im not sure if it can be thicker since i think im taking out the umd door and its guts..
