PS3 Controller into Xbox 360 Controller Shell
« on: March 14, 2013, 07:33:25 PM »
So I have several friends in the competitive gaming community who constantly switch between playing on the Xbox and PS3 depending on where a tournament is being held. Switching between controllers means they aren't getting used to the same controller all the time and like a majority of competitive gamers they enjoy the Xbox controller much more. On the market is several adapters such as the Cronus, XIM, XCM, etc. but all with some lag compensation that is fine for casual play but not competitive where every millisecond counts. My idea is to try and fit a PS3 controller motherboard into an Xbox 360 controller shell. Now I have no experience with PS3 controllers but I plan on taking on this challenge while keeping everything as close to the Xbox 360 controller specs. I will keep you guys updated on my progress but I am also willing to take any tips or ideas you have.

This might help you out some. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=648322 and http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=651946

You also might be wasting your time if you use the PS3 controller, unless you know that they're allowed in the tournaments they play in. A lot of places have them banned now as people can't keep their being a :censored: nature under control and messing with others games as the PS3 controller stays synced to the last console it was used on. For this reason they have been banned at a lot of tournaments and the next best setup is to use the PS2 controller and an adapter, with the InPiN PS2 to PS3 adapter being the more well known and best choice there.

I've build those as well, with the PS2 and InPiN adapter both inside the 360 shell, which takes a wireless shell to do as you need the extra room.

Then I've also made just the PS2 controller in the wired 360 shell with the PS2 cable, then the adapter is just used externally like normal.

Okay so I have received the Xbox 360 board from 3D0 (THANKS SO MUCH) and a PS3 controller from a friend. I used RDC's thread (found HERE) to identify my board. My next step is going to be understanding how this board works and how to make my connections. I am going to start by using simple tactile buttons to see if the PS3 will recognize the button press. From there I will go into fitting and wiring the board into the Xbox 360 controller shell.

It will not work correctly with the Daughter board removed, unless you put the 2 PullUp Resistors that are on it back in the circuit.

Connect a 6.8k Resistor from V to COM1, then another 6.8k Resistor from V to COM2, then you're new buttons will work properly.

So I am having some trouble fitting the board into the controller, I saw RDC's controller and where he cut it but there are chips on the board that stop me from cutting there. I have uploaded pictures of my board and maybe someone can just take them into Paint and put a ride line where I should trim it.

Just as I told you in the PM, there are no chips where I cut the board. The Sticks need to be removed, that's a given, then the left one rewired to some Vias as the bottom of the board gets trimmed and those spots will be lost.

If you're getting this idea the board needs to be cut that much from the first pic of the my PS360 thread on XS, it's the Trigger frames are what's cut so the board fits in there, it's not the board that's hacked up, though trimming the sides by 1 or 2mm at most might need to be done so it will fit after the Trigger frames are cut, but that's still far from any component on the board.

oh wow I feel incredibly stupid. Now I see that the trigger frames themselves have been cut that makes my life 100x easier...
