1708 board start button not working
« on: May 14, 2020, 02:52:38 PM »
Hi,
First all I am very new to repair controllers. I have one controller 1708 start button not working. I check the rubber and any dust on the board but nothing. I also try to short it with twizer still not response. Any one who can guide as to where to look or which component s burned.
Thanks in advance.

There is no Start button, if you mean the Menu button, the one just to the right if the Guide button, then check TP24 to ground and see what the Resistance is both unpressed and then pressed.

It's just a trace from the button to U4 pin 8, so it's a bad trace, via or U4.

yes you are right,it is guide button. can you please explain what is U4? I am sorry as I am very new to this. So the resistance to ground will dictate where the issue is?
Thanks for your quick response.

U4 is the small square IC on the bottom of the Button board. It is an I/O Expander and takes all of the button presses and sends them to the other board.

The Resistance measurement will tell you if the trace and button are working from TP24 to the button. Then there is a little bit of trace from TP24 to U4 to look at. It will not tell you if U4 is bad, but if the trace and button are good, then all that is left is U4. That IC can go bad like that and make only 1 button not work, but it should be the last thing that is tried.

Thanks for your reply. SO this U4 control all the buttons or just one? I have some board that has the other buttons not working like dpad half working and half not working.
I appreciate your input.

U4 reads all of the buttons, except for the B button since it's on the other board. That does not mean that U4 is always the problem. You could have a cracked PCB that would break a trace, a trace damaged in some other way, a bad via (the little 'tunnels' that connect the traces together where they go from top to bottom) or who knows what else. U4 should be the last thing you try replacing to fix a bad button issue.

What button does not work? You said that it was Start, the 'Start' button is Menu on the XB1 and that's TP24. There will be no Resistance from TP24 to Ground if the button is not pressed.

The one that has three lines. I rechecked the good one with the bad one and good shows some resistance and bad one is not showing any reistance. How to fix that? use a jumper cable or something like that.
Thanks for your response.

You need to figure out the problem first before you can figure out the best way to fix it. How much Resistance when the button is not pressed? When pressed?

Check from TP24, to the top side of the board at D7, the pad on the right. It's just under the MN button.

Also, make sure you're on TP24, it's the one to the left of where TP24 is marked. It's marked closer to the TP spot on the right, but that one is TP18, the one on the left of the TP24 marking is TP24.

That is the one I checked. D7 seems to be attached with dpad(swSW7).I checked D5 just underneath SW5 and got the continuity from the pad. D7 did not give me anything

Sorry yes D5 is the one, not D7 that's X.

If you have continuity from D5 left pad to TP24, and the trace from TP24 to U4 looks good, then U4 is probably at fault.

Sorry for late response. There is no continuity between TP24 to D5. It is completely open. Is this a direct connect or there are some components in between.

If TP24 to D5 left pad is open then jumper those spots together. No components in that button line.

I could not find that board. But do have one board that main button on the top does not work. The one that has led glows inside. Do you know what tp point should I test.
Thanks For all your help.

Guide/Home button. That one is a little different, since it also turns the controller on. Does it still turn the controller on?

If you're using the app built into Windows, it doesn't show that button press. It's pretty specific to the XB1 console anyway.

If you want to check it, then toss a couple of AA batteries in the controller and see if it turns on when Guide is pressed. Then you can check the Resistance from pin 2 of the J1 connector on the button board to ground and see if it goes low when Guide is pressed.

In windows it does show a menu. But buttery does not power the controller. pin2 of J1 gives no resistance. My guess is trace is broken but dont know the TP to test with. Is there a direct connection to pin 2 from home button.

I'm on W7 here and it doesn't, W10 prob does. Pin 2 of J1 does not go straight thru, D27 is in there, but you'll still get a Resistance measurement (black to ground, red on pin 2) if things are working. There is no TP spot for Guide.

Top side of C12 (pad) D28 (pad) and R24 then Right side of R27, C11 (pad) and D27 all connect to the Guide button trace. The left side of D27 goes to pin 2 of J1.

Is there any connection between C12 and D28 to home button. I see no connection in either of them on top to home button.

The top pads of C12 and D28 both connect to the Guide button line. That trace is visible on the top of the board. C12 to D28 to a via to Guide.

That's about the worst place for it to be damaged, as there is no copper under the button contact material to expose and solder to. Your only real good option there is to use a conductive pen and draw a trace back on there to reconnect it.
