need help urgently w/ n64 analog mod
« on: December 14, 2007, 01:57:29 PM »
i'm putting a ps2 analog into an n64,and have found out that the analog operates with an infra-red led,and a sensor for each axis, you scroll a little mesh wheel and it tells the infra red sensor which way it is pointing and from there tells the n64,my quesztion is does anyone have the pinouts for either the controller as a whole or just the analogs preferrably, thatd be awesome,
thanks

all you need to know is that its 4 point analog, like the psp's one im fairly certain

so a certain benheck conversion should do it

okay, you are right in some ways, but very wrong in others, i haven't seen one of these beasts in a while so you will have to forgive me

Basically how these things work is called photo-optical resistance

There are led's, but also another corresponding diode to each led which receives the light and a wheel with slots in it cuts the beam, its exactly the same technology in some of the later ball mouses such as the SNES one.

Some of the wires on the joystick are inputs, but a few are outputs, it works both ways, so you don't need ALL of the wires to put a ps2 stick in there.

The main input you will ignore is the voltage input which powers the led's i cant remember which one it is off the top of my head but the ps2 stick uses pots so it doesn't need power, get out your multimeter and test them. There may be other inputs I'm not sure but you wouldn't think there would be.

Now, dismantle your n64 stick and just see which wires run to which receptor diodes, they will all be sharing either a common cathode (ground) or positive with the opposites running to the wires on the connector. The LED's will be easy to spot as they will all be sharing the Voltage cable you found before with your multimeter and a cathode as well most likely as they do not require individuality.

Now, basically what i'd imagine you will have to do is connect your ps2 sticks corresponding points on the potentiometers to the connector on the controller mainboard in relation to how you position the stick.

Hope that helps
