My future PC for college...
« on: February 09, 2008, 10:52:56 AM »
Well, since I am going to college to be an engineer, I figured might as well get a good pc as I may be putting a lot of programs (processor intensive) on it.  This is what I have planned so far.

Chipset - nForce 650i SLI Chipset
Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600(2.4GHz)
Memory - 2x 2gig DDR2 800
HDD - 500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 8MB Cache 7200RPM
Optical Drive 1 - 20X DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Drive Dual Layer
Optical Drive 2 - 16X DVD-ROM
Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT 512MB or 8800GT 512MB
OS -  Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Ultimate for System Builders
Monitor -  SHARP AQUOS Black 32" 16:9 6ms 1080p LCD HDTV
Mods - as many LED's and EL wire as I can cram into this sucker, after I pick my case...

Total cost (as of today, will very likely drop soon) ~2000 USD

Because the engineering software takes a long ass time to render on low spec pc's also, I hate ANY lag at all, and these days my old Laptop is just getting by...

I would help you decide but I might change my major before even hitting college.  I think I want to major in computer engineering with a minor in aerodynamics and get a job with nasa...

I'd rather have the one large screen that I can use as a tv as well, PS3+360+Wii+PC all in one scrren
Also, I doubt i'd ever need more ram, but thats why I am getting the 2x 2 gig sticks in case i want to add more. (4 slots total)
also, the 10,000k HDD's make a lot of heat and noise and I plan on overclocking the CPU to 3.4-3.6 so I don't want any extra heat.

Nope I have never used lightscribe before but hey the drive was only 3 dollars more than a non lightscribe  version. Also Reaper make sure your case has a lock on it, so components don't get stolen, or the whole pc for that matter.

Lol I probably won't use it that often either, but if I ever need to print a label real quick for a presentation or something (to make it look professional) I''ll have the resources right there.

show me a mac with comparable specs for under a grand and i'll buy it...

of course theres a bluray reader for pc for $200 and reaper where you going to live because i hear people  break in to dorm rooms and steal stuff and you don't know your roommate

got a PS3 for blu-rays and i doubt I'll ever need to burn to em.  Got a 16 gig flash drive for my crap and a 160 gig usb harddrive (usb powered) for massive items.  Also, I got a single dorm, meaning the padlock is clicked unless im home.

thats why as tec said when i go uni im going to set up as much of my :censored: with kingston locks and i plan on installing whether the uni like it or not a security cam (even though im in a single dorm hopefully) so that i can catch the buggers in action and i also want it to be able to stream footage to the net so i can check whilst in class or at home for the weekend and i may put a gps tracker inside any large expensive stuff.

do you think im paranoid

i am not responsible for what i do or my advice

You BOTH suck! Rhino 3D for teh win!!! Did I just say that?? *gag*

On topic: Well knowing that I've used rhino and autocad, on our school computers, it takes like 2-3 minutes to render ANYTHING, so for that purpose, those specs will do nicely. Kinda confused at why you want vista ultimate, but thats just me.

Naw I think that's safe. My family car got stolen, the douches broke the window open and took it, it's been years since we filed the report, and they never had any trace on it. I would consider making a anti-theft shock system, just to really inflict pain upon those that try to filche you!
