REMOVING THE UMD DOOR

Introduction
It took me ages to figure out, but hey here it is.

Parts Needed
  • PSP

Tools Needed
  • Butter-knife

Step By Step Tutorial
1- Start off with you psp and gut it(remove all the insides)
Sorry about the blurriness i will fix it later

2- Grab your deadly weapon(No, not your sniper rifle).

3- And start stabbing.

Don't push it too far down or it will break.
4- Twist your knife and it should pop free.

5- Then you can laugh an evil laugh MUHHAHAHAHAHAHA

 :dribble:
It's ok now you can put the knife down and (don't forget children get your perents to help, we don't want you to hurt yourself with a blunt weapon) :x:

now for the mod.

what you need:
some glue(not pritt-stick)
retractable blade
plastic folder
scissors
some smd's
small thin wire
soldering iron and solder
hairdryer
sandpaper
10ohm resistors

1.ok first things first take the umd door off (don't ask me how)
put it somewhere and switch on the hairdryer and apply heat on the silver ring.

2.after you know for sure the glue under the ring has melted, get a small flat headed screwdriver and peel off the ring.

3.get your blade and start carving the circle out

half an hour later

an hour later

success

4.ok now take out the middle bit

yup and you guessed it carve around it

until it looks pretty

5.get your sandpaper now and make the edges nice and round and smooth

ta daaaa :faint:

6.now the folder, get the sicissors and cut a square out the size off your umd door. it should fit snugly inside with no gaps

7.get your super stong glue

mix it if you have to

and put it on a piece of scrap paper.

find some rubbish (i'm using a plastic tube) and use it to apply the glue around the inside of the umd door(don't apply too much or it will come out the front)

8.now put the sheet of plastic on

9.put a blob of glue on the centre bit

and stick it on

10.now heres the hardest bit in this whole tut, LEAVE IT ALONE TO DRY AND DON'T TOUCH OR PROD IT

11.solder your 10ohm resistor to your smd and two wires

12.solder two wires onto the powerboard

look here an easier way and the positive and negative poles
https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=18429.0

13.glue the smds on the umd door

14. this is a confusing bit, you must solder the smd's too the powerboard, try them out first before soldering them.

ta da da dat daa daaa daaaaaa!!!! :#1:
stick the umd door back on carefully

and try it out

Hehe, well I just checked out this thread on a PC at work with a sucky screen resolution so I had to scroll left and right to see the full image with them being so big but it was definately entertaining.  I'll keep this tut in mind when I begin dissassembly here shortly.  Thanks for sharing!  :hifive:

thanks for the tutorial, there was never an esay tut especially on llama.com, that umd removal sucked. and also, instead of using a clear folder, i sacraficed my Mr. and Mrs. Smith UMD and made a jewel out of that.

i ripped the movie so dont worry  :winker:

What plastic are you using, and how sturdy is it? Also, I want to use a cd case for the plastic, but I know these crack easily, right?

Well that looks like he is using something REALLY THIN. Ive been told by 4dP to use the plastic from a UMD Case (The actual Box not the UMD :x: )

CD cases work well as long as you take your time cutting it. I just did my ring of light prep (everything minus the lights) two nights ago. All you need is an exacto knife and patience cutting the cd case. What I did was cut most of it then bend it to break the sides of the square I made with it.

Probable refering Smd's as in smd led as in small leds.603 r  what most ppl use for everything.

good tut... Ive done this b4 but with a cd case, i had to cut 2 circle out of it and couldnt use a square plastic 'cause it was too thick. I cracked it many times, and finally got one in working, and after droping it a few times it cracked. :eyebrow:

i had those folder b4 but i threw them out.  :boxed:
Now i gave up with the ring of light
lol

hey guys to make this sound reactive you could just solder them on a speaker right? like jumbo's tut also i recommend using the plastic from a CD case that you could buy in packs of 12 or sumting, its much more clearer also it isn't thick ( I'm not saying that your folder is thick or anything) and its strong too.

Instead of spending an hour carving, you could try stabbing it hard so that it punches through the plastic, takes 30 seconds that way.

no you can't, it would just snap at the hinges. you don't have to strip it very far. follow this tut https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=13466.0 and get this far

then you can do it

Would the 10ohm resistor work for some 100mcd Yellow 0603 SMD LEDs? Or should I use a 28ohm one?
Sorry if this is a nooby question

hey im confused, about the 10ohm resistors where do u connect it? Sorry this is my first time modding my psp. And can u be more specific which wire did u use and which one did u connect to? thnx

The 10ohm resistors can go pretty much anywhere in the circuit. They have no polarity, so it doesn't really matter with way you connect them. Also, use coated 30AWG Kynar/Magnet wire.

oh ok, would these work?

(oh and would it matter if it was magnetic or not magnetic?) because i heard that Magnet wire can scratch and the enammel insulation comes off easy which can cause major shorts in your psp. Kynar 30awg is much more duarable and it is used by the majority of acidmods.(http://www.pspmod.com/forums/hardware/42694-psp-30-awg-magnet-wire-enamel-coated.html)

oh and are the smd's are like led's?

No. Those resistors on RadioShack are 10W. If you scroll down on the search page, you'll find these ones:
RadioShack 10ohm Resistors 1/4W
Yes, use Kynar. Sorry, hadn't read before that it was a better one to use.
Yes, the SMDs are LEDs. They're surface-mounted ones. Ideally use 0603 SMD LEDs
Hope that answers your questions.

The resistor can go pretty much anywhere in the circuit. So, for example, the wire would come from the positive point to one of the
sides on the resistor. Then on the other side the wire can lead up to your LEDs or whatever things you will have in a circuit. Resistors
don't have a polarity, which means there's no positive or negative sides, so you won't have to worry about which way you put it in.

You would solder one of the wires to the left point of that resistor and another to the right.

I hope that answers your question.
It's the basics that bring us down.

I didn't do the ring of light, instead I put clear plastic where the PSP logo is on the UMD door, and now, it won't play any UMD's. The thing that spins the disk will spin, but it doesn't catch the disk. Did I do something wrong?
