First before you do ANYTHING!
Go to the Control Panel - In the top right hand corner it will say search type UAC, you can probably figure the rest out on your own, but TURN IT OFF.  It's the most annoying feature of Vista...

turn User Account Control off so you don't get those annoying pop ups every time you want to do something. Also if a program doesn't work add it to the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) list.

Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings ->Tab Advanced -> Performance Settings -> DEP

Sometimes Vista will give you errors with playing Valve games. But there is an easy fix.

some of the gadgets you can download are cool, I have one that switches my wallpaper every half hour, and a weather gadget.

I would recommend S.T.A.L.K.E.R. if you wanna see some amazing visuals, especially with the full H.D.R. mod

I admit that I'm pro-windows (not fanboy, cause I don't hate mac or anything) but I can't stand Vista lol. To me it looks like a gimmick and with all the problems I've heard of it sounds like its gonna be the next Windows ME, so I'm just skipping it. When the next one comes out I'll more then likely pick it up tho. Runnin stable/fast so far?

hmm, one thing i did notice between OSX/XP and vista..

when i startup, my disk makes a bunch of noise it does not normally, but stops after a minute in windows, but more like 8 minutes in vista...

i heard it had somthing to do with cacheing...a way to decrease this?

another thing: how can i speed up sleep mode, as i am often on-the-go and need it asleep quicker than the default (there was a fix for osx to make it go faster, one for vista perhaps?)

THX

BTW: no real issues so far, stuff seems to work, got ATItool to work to monitor my temps,
so far i don't see what the big deal is
i did notice my processor is more loaded up than with xp, but i expected that
i am confident in my computer because it was 2007's best vista notebook (according to pcworld i believe)
it was good that i upgraded as xp had too much crap building up and explorer would quit randomly...despite that, i feel a little regret, but that happens often when i make these kinds of decisions so i hope it passes soon so i can enjoy this OS...

i havent even gone to sp1 yet and tis fine...

Yeah Vista is a good OS everything was running incredibly smooth for my pc when I was using it.
Damn my stupid brother that f*cks up OS's.Now I'm on XP sp2 (damn Greek version!!) and I'm waiting 'till I can install
again Vista Ultimate or the sp1. Dual boot of course because I still need xp for some stuff.

It's something called superfetch, it remembers what programs you use the most a preloads them into your ram under low priority so everything runs smoother.  My Desktop usually spins for like 20 seconds to get all of it's data.

A very very good tip about using vista is not to have many files on your desktop because it loads slower.
I didn't know that and after putting all my desktop files in a folder the startup time was back to when I
1st installed vista =)
