Run your DS Lite with only the bottom screen
« on: August 10, 2008, 10:10:32 PM »
 :taunt: in your face nintendo
put a load on these points (direct connect may work but i havnt tested it and i dont plan to) and your DS Lite wont shut off when there isnt a screen connected

i used a red led with a 10k ohm resistor on it, this worked fine but only for the lowest brightness setting
i suggest blue or white leds because they use higher voltage
resistors may not be necessary

why would you want to run it on only the botton screen? I mean it makes more sense just to get a gba and accomplice the same thing. it's pretty neat though
EDIT: after thinking about it this is a pretty cool idea. A detachable top screen would be pretty cool

Thank you for finding that.  I have been searching for a bypass for a while now but never could find the right pins.   I will have to test that out soon

=] thanks, its useful if you never even use the top screen
like me, the most things i use is Colors paint app and StillAlive V1.1
neither of which have anything terribly important on the top screen

You know a much easier way to solder them would be to use the test point that the backlight connects to.  It is labeled LEDA2

Also you most likely don't have to use a LED a regular diode would probably work as well but I have not tried that yet.

i used the first point i could trace to, i dont know what all the test points do
also, what about the other point? you only circled one O_o??

if you can use a reg diode and be able to change through all the brightnesses...
PLEEEEAAASSE LET ME KNOW!!! =P

Oh yeah forgot to mention that.  The top pin is just a ground. So you have the positive going out of that test point and the diode on the ground. I still have not tried a diode theoretically it should work since all a LED is a Light emitting diode

well hey, once u test let me know

btw someone told me there was a capacitor in the backlight circuit, so idk, might need that

You are correct their is a capacitor on it but it just connects it form the positive to the ground.  So I dont think it does anything unless their is too much power stored up.

Edit: I just tested a diode and it does work even on the full brightness but you cant change brightnesses too fast or else it will turn off.  Also I dont know if this is bad but the Diode will get too hot to even touch so I think I just need more resistant diode.

if im not mistaken doesnt more resistance = more heat?
have you tried 4 diodes? just to try to match the circuit?
try your diode and a/the capacitor in parallel, like they are on the circuit, maybe it does more that you/we think

btw too much resistance will shut off the ds

Yes but I was thinking maybe with a more resistant diode we wouldnt have the problem of the DS turning off when brightness settings changed.  Also I am using 0603 diode so it might be cooler with a bigger one.

lol ok, yeah id probably try using one of these
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2036269&cp=&sr=1&origkw=diode&kw=diode&parentPage=search
might solve both those issues

but, did you try with the cap also or no?

No I havent had time to.  But im quite sure it doesnt do anything since the whole ds motherboard is covered with them connecting to ground

well im just thinking that maybe a diode isnt needed at all if the cap is there
it has to do something though, or else they wouldnt put it there.... the question is.... what does it do?

well you are definitely right... by itself, the capacitor does nothing, now i think ill try the cap and a diode in series, just like it is in the backlight, it HAS to have some purpose or else it wouldnt be there

apparently that top connection is not just any old ground because when i switch my working setup to leda2 and ground it doesnt work

btw, the test point ledA2... could that be LED Anode 2?
if so, then shouldnt ledc2 be LED Cathode 2?

YES LEDC2 is for the cathode end of the led backlight strip

this WILL be done

too bad the DS lite doesnt use a clock signal, like the phat, to seperate the top and bottom screen images..
if it did then this would be alot more useful
