Ipod Camera Connector to PSP
« on: September 12, 2008, 11:11:23 AM »
I had my first chance to dig into a Ipod Camera Connector today.

Many people have asked me if it could be hacked to make
a hard drive interface for the PSP.

The short answer is yes it can, the long answer is you don't want to
use it as it is so slooooooooooooooooow.

It would remind you of the days of trying to load programs into
your computer off of cassette tape.

1 gig transfer is on the order of 5 to 10 minutes.

So if you wanted to play God of War you would have
enough time to eat between program section loads.

The max transfer rate is USB Full Speed or 12 mbit / second and
it never even reaches that.

So even though it can be hacked to make it work, you would
still have to write the PSP side of the software.

Irshell has the hooks to talk to usb mass storage but only
if the correct software is on the drive side. It works very
cleverly by the drive side watching for special data that
the PSP transfers to the host side and responding with the
data in a particular way.

If you wanted to use the Ipod Camera Connector with
irshell you would have to install the software that normally
resides on your Windows or Linux computer to make it
work. Can't get there from here is what it looks like.

I did not want to pop any ones bubble but these are
the facts that I have found out.

I did not do it, I examined the hardware to see if it could be done.

It can, but you are going to have to write all new code for the
embedded controller in the Ipod Camera Adapter.

My transfer figures are for transferring images from a camera to the
Ipod.

The built in software at this time only copies from the camera
to the IPOD not the other way.

You would have to write all that code yourself and with the limitations
to the hardware speeds, in my opinion it is not worth the effort.

ok I've wondered this and I know its unrelated, but will that adaptor only work with the iPod photo? I have an iPod touch and I think it would be cool to connect it to my camera. Anyway, to connect a psp to a hard drive or iPod would be cool, but if its only gonna go really slow like 12mbs (I think that's correct) then its kinda pointless.

It only works with the photo or video. It does not even work with the new classic

I see.

Well I'm not a programer so I wouldn't be able to do this.
And I don't have an iPod anyway.
