Nose gets runny while soldering

Is it just me? Or does anybody elses noses get runny as hell whilst soldering

Really pisses me off, im fine rest of the day, but when it comes to delicate soldering, i can barely breath and all i can hear is sniffiling

I even bought an FPP3 Mask, which is capable of blocking carbon monoxide, and it still happens just as much

Do you use flux or solder with flux?

Flux allergies aren't unknown, something to do with plant extracts in it or something like that.

Also, wear a mask if you don't already, it should stop the symptoms whatever is causing them.

My solder has flux in, it could be flux, i could be allergic to it, wow that would suck since im so into electronics, or could be allergic to lead or something? is that even possible? Lead allergies?

I wear a FPP3 mask which should stop it anyway, seems to not have worked

Try lead-free solder maybe?

Maybe try a small test not using flux and lead, see what happens.

Nope, still happens with lead free solder, tried just an hour ago with my spare roll (which i noticed is lead free, i used it as a spare because lead free is no where near as good as normal solder)

So i could be allegic to flux

Man that sucks!!! HOW CAN I BE  A MODDER WHEN IM ALLERGIC TO FLUX!!!!!! Thats like being allergic to LEDs as an acidmodder

I just get really shakey hands when I solder, hopefully that will calm down soon. And how did you manage to get non-lead-free solder? I thought they wern't supposed to sell solder with lead in it any more?

Nah its just that its a bad reputational thing if they sell none RoHS items

Lead solder is obviously not RoHs

Thats why maplins dont sell it

Rapid have lead solder though, but mostly lead-free

in the industry soldering is required to be done using a fume extractor, like under a hood with hepa filters. Try using a fan to blow ur fumes away from you.

Or there are hundreds of DIY fume extractor projects out there:

It sux being allergic to something you love, many people are allergic to pets and still have them, they just figure out how to deal with it.  I love hunting and I hunted whitetail deer for years and years before I actually got one, come to find out I am highly allergic to their dander.  My first deer I shot, made my face pretty much swell shut.....go figure.  Since then, I am able to minimize my reaction to them by taking steps to reduce my exposure. The point of my babling on this: you may never figure out a way to cure ur issue but most certainly there is a way to ease the severity of it.

And phenomenal, my soldering iron has a fume extractor built into the handle and it extends alongside the tip, always gets in the way but it works well. I also have an external fume extractor.

Guys, i found a fume extractor at maplin for just £10

Wanted to know if it will be any good, since i cannot STAND working espeically on 0603 leds when i can barely breathe

Is it worth my buying that (remember im only a 14 year old kid)

or spending 5x that for a branded one at rapid?

or build one? (that will cost me more though, for the supplies, when fans are about £10 each, then on top of that, fan controllers etc

I say start out with the one from maplins.  Then over time you will accumulate stuff to make one, once you know what you need to keep and eye out for.

I know from newegg I can get a fan and controller for like $6(controller=fanmate2), but u brits get screwed on prices.

you can make a fan controller with a 555 timer, a transistor, a potentiometer and a few diodes and resistors and caps. I can link you if ur interested.

you may want to look into putting a carbon filter on your design so that u arent pushing fumes all around your work area.

Ive made an order with rapid, I ordered a carbon filter for another one, so I could use that in future, i might head into maplins tommorow to get a few bits and bobs
