And no, it won't affect Macs.

it relies on an exploit in svchost.exe to get on, a buffer overflow.

Not to mention, Macs don't run Windows apps native, so it just wont happen

You don't really. If you've been relatively smart about what you do, and have good protection, then you should be fine.

We're taking extra precautions, and being lazy.

and darkshot, it relies on a emergency windows updater that was started in oct 2008, not svchost.

Dude, CALM DOWN omg you're gonna be fine. Stop freaking out.

Linux can't be attacked because for a virus to do anything, it would need root access. You can only gain root access through terminal, which only the user can do.
Even with root access, virus' can do little harm on a linux box.

Now, regarding this crap. CALM DOWN. You're gonna be fine. Just keep your AV and Firewall up and you should be fine. You don't need linux. Most people here already have it, and are just going to use that until this dies down. I for one am going to boot into Ubuntu because I've been too lazy until now to use it, and I've got to fix some things up anyway.

If you're that worried about it, back everything up regularly and keep those backups safe in case you're infected and your whole life's progress gets decimated in the virus' wake.

im still wonderingg why my ubuntu wont boot. it goes to the boot menu, i choose ubuntu. it flashes something quick. then goes back to the boot menu....it runs with xp but i cant get it to boot into ubuntu...any ideas?

and kicks, thanks for describing how ubuntu is safer, cuz i had no idea how to word it.

ok just to make you guys feel better - i have spoken to the server company and im assured they keep 7 days of backup and they also say that there servers wont be affected directly by the worm unless a DDOS attack is used

What you're talking about is the fix. I did make a mistake though. I meant the worm needed a specific service exploit to get on the computer and spread.

From Wkikpedia:

"The Conficker worm spreads itself primarily through a buffer overflow vulnerability in the Server Service on Windows computers. The worm uses a specially crafted RPC request to execute code on the target computer."

So that was what was wrong with my computer before I done a system restore... Conficker! Never even heard of it, I don't know why, Most worms I have heard of because there aren't many of them.
