Video card upgrade suggestion
« on: July 14, 2009, 06:26:17 PM »
Hey I have a Compaq Presario Sr1220nx which I bought in 2004.  I want to upgrade it but want to keep it cheap.  I was thinking of upgrading the grahpics card but don't know which one I should get because it has a 2.93GHz Intel Celeron D Processor 340.
Which I might also upgrade but if I don't wish to, whats the best (cheap) graphics card I can get?

Here are the motherboard specifications:
P4GV-LA:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00361578&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ie&product=431080&lang=en

Compaq Presario SR1220NX Desktop PC:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prodinfoCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=ie&lang=en&product=431080
I have upgarded the ram to 1GB from 512MB (both slots)

It has a integrated grahpics card that can at most play HQ (not HD) videos on youtube.  I want it to be able to play HD on youtube and maybe CoD4 (if cheap).

Also it will be great if anyone can tell me whats the best (again cheap) processor to upgrade to.

All you have are PCI slots...it's not worth it to upgrade.

LOL I used to have that computer
No its not upgrading.
YOu need a new mobo to get a graphic card that will even do you any good. And A power supply, and ram,and a new case to fit the mobo,
about 75$ more can get you a whole new way better pc
However today I was brutally raped by a door handle, and none of my friends helped me up off the floor after ten minutes, instead they all teabaged me, all 10 of them...

Agreed, it is not worth it to upgrade it. Just go to tiger direct and pick out a barebones system and build it. You will be much more happy.

Not to upgrade you can't... If you wanted to upgrade that to something decent, it would cost more than $75.

75$ will get you upgrades at what you have already but spedning far to much on them

When I said spend the extra 75, I meant spend a extra 75 to build a whole new complete pc

Hmm well, Depends what you want
Also, chossing your gpahic cards also depends on your monitor size, and game requirements
you can build a pc with a bad graphic card with quad core, or a god graphic card with a dual core

I know a lot about internal computering and a some about external.  I have a friend whom is a gamer and makes custom PCs.  I'm going to go to him to help me look up what I need.

$200-450 ish.
Need a PC that has good graphics to play HD movies and HD youtube.  Can maybe play CoD4 (don't need it but I know that Gefore 6500 works fine).  I have two hard drives (60 and 80 Gig), CD player, DVD player all IDE (I can get a converter to SATA).  SATA converter is 12 for each slot so that make it $48.  Also may need a power supply (says 250W MAX on the current one).  No need of a case.  It'll make it easy if it has one IDE (PATA) slot on the motherboard.

Thanks again.

It does depend! His screen size etc.H could have a 50 inch screen Monitor but not need much gaming (like freakin n64 emulating)

So to you PSp kicks, you come back when time to looks things over and not Insult People for no reason.

You're wrong. Oh, and there's no such thing as a 50" monitor, by the way.

Hmm, well, I'll find everything for you. You're going to want a new case, because computer companies don't use standard form factors so your old case most likely won't work. Give me a couple minutes and I'll see what I can come up with.

Alright. Parts and all comes to $450 exact, not including shipping and those ide to sata adapters. Personally, I'd shell out the rest for sata upgrades. Ide harddrives are much, much, slower compared to sata.

Motherboard
CPU
RAM
PSU
GPU
Case

It allows you to upgrade it a ton in the future if you want. You can quadruple the RAM up to 16GB, pop in a Core 2 Quad if you ever need more power, upgrade the videocard a little bit more (Nothing extreme, it doesn't have a Pci-e 2.0 slot), and add a ton of harddrives if you wanted. It allows tons of expandability, and is cheap.

Hope that helped a little.

Do something like this:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4692668&sku=B69-1085
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4209965
He can't, that motherboard doesn't have a pcie2.0 slot for that graphics card.

loganbyers07 =  Sounds like a great deal but idk which to choose now.

Kicks - Little off the budget but I'm going to buy them slowly.  Thinking of buying the motherboard and the processor tomorrow.  I currently have a 17" CRT monitor but I sometimes use one of my two HDTVs (Sony Bravia 46" HDTV 46XBR2 and Toshiba 32" HDTV..).  But thats the case if my awesome laptop (toshiba a205-S4777  http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Satellite-A205-S4777-15-4-inch-Processor/dp/B000RN7OUE has a fingerprint scanner lol) does work cause sometimes I have problem connecting it to the TV.

and kicks the parts without shipping are the total of $436.94

CRT...so that'd be a VGA port. The graphics card I had picked has a VGA port on it for ya. You'll be completely fine using the HDTVs with the graphics card, including light gaming, but any graphics intense games might be rough to play on the HDTVs.

And, I just rounded up to the nearest 5 or 0 when I added them up. Easier. lol

I was actually thinking of getting a flat LCD screen first but I guess I'll get the mobo and proccessor...and the others after that.  As of what I know, 64 bit are bad cause there aren't many 64 bit programs out there.

It's not the programs, it's the drivers. As long as there are 64bit drivers for the hardware you want, you're fine.
