LED Questions (First Post!)
« on: September 17, 2009, 09:26:41 PM »
Hey guys, this is my first post!

I'm pretty new to NDSL modding, but the first project I'm going to work on is installing a transparent case, and adding LED lighting effects. I will be using 0603 SMD LEDs, with kynar wire. Could someone give me a list (and if possible images) of various power sources for the LEDs? Could you also tell me what resistors (if any) that I need, and at what resistance?

Also, I was wondering how you put LEDs under the buttons, and is it possible for an LED to only be on when a button is pressed? I heard somewhere that you can't run different colored LEDs in a series... I want different colored LEDs under under each button, would I need to run each separate LED to the power source?

Thanks!:drunk:

(remember I'm new! Be nice!)

Probably just wire them to the power LED.
This way they are always on when the ds is on.

power led is at the top right.

I think that would overload the power LED circuit, it is only designed for one LED... :dntknw:

I know a good amount about electronics, but not the DS...

Bleh, electronics are flexible.

Just find another switched source then.

To run different colors of LEDs, if you want to share a power source, you will need to run them in parallel and add a resistor onto each LED. More info here:
http://www.theledlight.com/ledcircuits.html

You can't put them directly under the buttons, but you might be able to put them off to the side a bit, although it will probably be hard.

If you poke around with a multimeter, I'm sure you'll be able to find a power source for your LEDs. You say you know a decent amount about electronics so you should be able to use a multimeter. :)

Good luck!

I was originally going to try this, but in some mods people use no resistors, wiring them directly to the power source. But, they used all the same color LED. I can't remember what power sorce it was though...

It's been done many times before...

Normally I would do that, but I want a safe power source that won't interfere with any other functions.

For something like the DS youll need do your leds in parallel and iw ould use resistors because if you dont the leds wont last as long as usual depending on the voltage that is being supplied to and also the current. Any power source should fine to use and be safe as long as you get your calculations right with amount of power being supplied to the leds and using the resistors to drop it down so it will just right for the leds to use.
