Heated/Cooled Controller
« on: December 23, 2009, 03:36:40 PM »
umm today i was playing halo3 and my hands were really cold so i turned  on my heater then 5 minutes later the breaker tripped and the Xbox and the heater both turned off. i was pissed

i wonder if its possible to heat something with 5v and 1A of power inside a controller.

what if someone added laptop cpu fans in a controller, will it keep your hands cool?

well i dnt kno about a heater but my hands get really sweaty from playing cod (eewww lol) so i put 2 mini fans i got out of a broken toy and put them in my controller. if u wnt ill go searching for the fans i used.

Heating it would probably cause problems with the controller..

i was looking around the net and there is a fan that pushes air with no moving parts.
Edit: heres a link: http://www.physorg.com/news125057974.html
it uses charged ions to push the air.
Maybe i could find something like that.

The heating maybe solved by wrapping some 18 gauge insulated tungsten wire to the inner casing of the controller and regulating power control with a zener diode.

I'm not sure about the tungsten wire.  If you heat up tungsten wire without the proper gasses and pressure it will burn / react very quickly.  Not like it does in lightbulbs.

just get a hand warmer or something.  it would be safer then messing with heating elements.  and as for cooling they already have controllers made to do that.  Or you can get a small fan and attach it inside the controller.

heating stuff sucks ALOT of power, just tossing that out there.
I got an idea for heating, mod the controller inside a xbox 360, problem solved.

Cooling is realistic though, I have a ps2 slim fan here, its pretty small but I don't think it will fit even with removed rumbles.

yea ps2 slimline fans wont work known from past experiance lol but here are some fans:
http://www.sunon.com/mmfan/mmfan_e.htm

i think a 15x15 should fit pretty good, u can get the fans from digikey.com

did some reasearch and found this:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=13298478&findingMethod=rr#ProductDetail

its a mini hand warmer, just take it apart and connect to the voltage on the controller or if u hve a plug n play kit for a 360 put the positive and negative into the positive and negative pins on the charger port of the hand warmer and just use the batt that came with it. or use the usb that came with it as a charging port.

idk just throwing ideas in the air, someone can catch them if they want too lol

the hand warmer that lakrulez14 found is USB powered. it can be hooked up to a wired controller.
 Features:
    * Approximately 7-10 hours of heating time
    * High and Low heat settings
    * Heat temperature range: 100-113 oF
    * Operating temp range: 14-113 oF
    * Li-batteries are rechargeable up to 500 times
    * AC charger or USB power

and i just thought about it couldnt u put a pot on the positive giving energy to the heater cuz then u can control the temp couldnt u? just brainstorming again

cool cool man but the only way i can think to do that is using a variable voltage regulator, like an LM317 and a pot. i wonder if someone will try to build the heater thingy.

If i were to put cooling fans, where would you like the air to come?

I would just drill little holes all over.

remove the vibration then put the fans in there. then drill about 3/16" to 1/8" holes for the vents. that seems ideal.

Do you think it is necessary to have holes for intake in the back or somewhere?

is there not a way to convert the rumbles into fans?

yeah. it might takes some time to figure out. in my opinion no since rumble packs' rumbling thingy(whatever your supposed to called the heavy thing on the motor) the metal thing doesn't push air efficiently. so how will you convert that into a fan? maybe some plastic and super glue?

ghost with that in mind i think that by drilling small holes into the handles of the controller over the rumblers, this would provide vetelation. A few pieces of some sort of material to make the blades  and it could work.

I have a few motars  i can test this out later tonight

I'm going to make a heater for an old PS2 to see if it works with an old soldering iron heater coil and a 2 Watt 50 Ohm Resistor. If that works then i will try something more expensive. like a hand warmer then install that in my favorite wired 360 controller      ^_^

that sounds like a plan however my only concern would be melting the casing

I don't care if my PS2 controller melts; i know it will melt
The resistor will drop enough voltage to reduce heat. so yeah plus im not using a soldering iron coil for the final product. Pictures will be posted soon.

The only concern I have with converting the rumblers into fans is that much of the fans air pushing efficiency comes from the design of the blades being close to the enclosure.  You might be able to get some small fans and wire them to the rumble connections if you want it to turn of with the rumble.  Idk, why you wouldn't just use a switch then.

true about that, Im a student pilot i have a good amount of hours logged in a pa-28 140/150. This is mind a fan blade with a tilt of 60 degrees inward should provide  a good amount of airflow

Out of my buddy's Laptop Charger Power Supplies i found a fan that perfectly fits the size of inside of an xbox360 controller. It doesn't blow; it sucks. Its a bit more chilling when it sucks. That part that blows air doesn't work as well 'cuz the surface area of the air going out is not as large as the surface area of the air going in.

Here's a Drawing of the fan i got. Its Approximately the same size of the drawing. (maybe smaller)

EDIT: This is Exactly called a Forward Curve Centrifuge Fan... If your wondering.

Also known as a 'squirrel cage' fan... has anyone considered inductive material? I remember seeing this stuff somewhere, can't remember where though, but basically you apply voltage to the leads and if you have something hot touch it, then the material cools it and vice versa... if I remember correctly it's sometimes used in place of heat sinks...

edit:
Thermoelectric Modules...  don't know if they're moldable, or if they can be found extremely thin, but worth a look...

Hey guys maybe someone knows how asus ice cool technology is working?
Ive read somewhere that is has something to do with the design of their laptops, but i dont think that this will have such a noticeable effect..
just throwing in an idea..
I would be very interested in cooling because my controller gets uncomfortable hot after playing for some hours
