how to dye not paint your systems plastics EASY!
« on: January 02, 2010, 04:31:16 PM »
ok after a few failed attempts of painting systems, mostly 360s, with spraypaints...no matter what the quality of the paint and the job, it still doesnt look that grate..and its horrible when you paint controllers.
so back in the day i used to race gas r/c cars and we used to dye our plastics for a custom look..and i said..why not use it on a 360?
and if you look on a site like ebay they all say their dyed...this is how you do it.

go to a local store like wal-mart and get so Rit brand dye. the only one ive tried is the powderd..at the moment i have no extra parts to use the liquid on.

in my oppinion its easyier than painting, you get the packet of dye, metal pot of boiling water and dump in the dye..
then say your doing a 360 controller..after you take it apart..take a pice of fishing line and tie it to a wire hanger
and leave it in the pot for about 5 minutes..the longer you leave it in the darker and more the color will penetrate the plastic.
its that easy...the only hard part is finding a big enough pot to dye the bigger console pieces..

it hardly shows up on black plastic it kind of has a tint of the color but not really
so anything white is grate.
and it also tints clear plastics so if you get a ghost case and dye it red its translucent.

if anyone would like a more in depth tut let me know...im puting up a youtube tut soon as well

I doubt it would just wash off, since the whole idea is that the hot water helps it penetrate into the plastic. I doubt it would work that great without extensive soaking (I've used rit dye on fabrics before and it doesn't even work that great on fabrics, the actual material it's intended to be used on), but I don't doubt that it kinda works, hell it might work better than it does on fabric, I don't know...

and I've never heard of anyone in the auto industry using rit dye on anything...

Wont the boiling water melt plastic on the controller?

Maybe Dipping the Parts in Hot Dye with the help of ultrasonic sound to get a deeper soaked color?
I'm keeping this one in mind and i'll try it someday.

didn't melt PSP Go trim plastic. I hope the 360 controller is made out of more durable plastic then the trim. My guess is you would be safe dying it with boiling water.

The dye is like $1.80 why not try it now lol.

You can do it inside. Boil water, put powder dye in, dip something in it, wait ten minutes, rinse, dry.
It doesn't stink up a house the way spray paint does.

I meant I don't feel like getting my coat starting the car and driving to the store for Rit dye knowing my luck 50/50 change of it working. AND it wastes gas. So I'll try it sometime sooner or later but not tonight.

ok some people are sceptical other than one guy, but no it wont wash out (why would you hose it down anyway?)  its DYE not water color..and just bring the water to a boil , put in the powder, turn it off and get a coat hanger and a pice of fishing line and hang the pices off that so their not touching the pot and wait 10 minits...right now i have a 360 elite so thers nothing to dye but im waiting on a white shell and do mine lime green..
btw go to rit's website and they have a color mix chart=)

youtube tut comin soon to proove the sceptics wrong

I bought Liquid Black Rit Dye today at my craft store($3.99). I Boiled my White plastic Battery case to test for 10 minutes in the water and Dye. Then I let it sit in the pot for another 20 minutes when the stove was turned off. It came out Dark Grey. This method kinda works in my opinion; but if your looking for a light color such as pink or sky blue or lime green, go for it. plus it looks a little better than the old black or white. Definitely worth the try. better than spray paint because you don't have to worry about fumes and making the coat too thick.

   :#1: :drunk:
Yea i was wrong but ok its still cool.

I don't doubt it actually works, I just wonder if it will look faded or keep it's brightness, I've done enough tie-dying to know that rit doesn't exactly stay as bright as it looks when you take it out of the dye after you rinse it...

see that's what I was talking about... same thing as when you dye fabric, looks black, but turns out grey...

ive never tried the liquid for anything so that is a possibility that it wont be as good..or it could have been the ratio between the water and dye...who knows..all will be revealed as soon as i get my :censored: together and throw up a tut

the liquid is the same as the powder it's just had a small amount of water added to it to make it a liquid. I used to use it to make tie-dyes as it was easier to use than to make your own concentrate from the powder, but it's the exact same thing...

instead of using material die (which will not bond properly with the plastic hence fooks has grey fingers now) try using vinyl die's which are designed to die plastic

http://www.parasolinc.com/dyes_paints.asp
here's a link to a vinyl die supplier....

Sigs made by Ken and blazin from the AM Art team cheers guys.....

multiple companies make plastic and vinyl dye in rattle can form. rustoleum and duplicolor brands make this type of dye, you can find them at autozone or walmart... and a can is under $10...

edit:
this is the method used by most of the companies that sell custom color controllers on ebay...

I tried this method and I kept the controller parts in the dye for more than 10 mins and the dye barely did anything but ruin the parts. I don't suggest this method. You are better off painting your controller.

vynil dye like laxboy and Jr pointed out, is the right kind of dye.

Do not use rit dye unless you plan on using a clear coat because it will stain you hands and everything else.
