555timer mod for pc...need help
« on: January 22, 2010, 02:04:12 PM »
Im creating a 555timer fader for a PC mod and need some help with my skemetics

i tryied all three with No success in making it fade...I fallowed this skemetics to the point, tryied to swap the 10uf with 1uf and the r1 resistor with a 105kohm pot but no luck.
this was a project i wanted to complete but do not have a helping hand and do not knw what went wrong ... can some one review my skemetics and tell me my wiring errors?

if you have some 12f683's at your house you can use t0pfader that would give the same efect

OK, i can design a circuit for you because that's what i do =D

It will not require PICs because i dont waste my time on a computer typing up code all day.

There are Two Options to tackle this cicuit:

1. Buy an Extra Huge Capacitor and Parallel it with your LEDs

2. Create a Digital Resistor ladder to sequentially increase the brightness bit by bit.

Option 1 will require less time but you run the risk of smoking the 555 since current draw will be huge and the fade is hard to control . (least efficient and you'll need to wait for the Capacitor to charge which might take a few seconds.)

Option 2 might be the expensive and harder to build method but its the most reliable and controllable. It uses a few RS flip flops, one 555 timer and a good bit of resistors.

Thanks FOOKz i suck at making my own circuitry desgns >.<

Hmmm i prefer option one cause its cheap lol..but hate the bruning out the chip... two is expensive and harder to build but true and has a better controll......

I prefer two then...i dont mind the hard work... ill figure it out :0 i work better when things are hard anyways. and eventually ill have cash in my card and will be able to buy some of the things needed :)

i am estimating option 2's parts cost to be about $10-$15.

Trust me its worth it. You don't need to learn how to program, just swapp a few resistors and you change the brightness.

oh i have saved $20 sweet and yeh i wouldnt mind that i have tons of different resistors everywhere lol and since i dont have to bother in programing it that TOPS! :D

your such an awesome person dude cant thank you enough fookz

OK I GOT IT FOR YA!

I have designed 3 Ways to do this, this design seems to be the cheapest, practical, easy, and efficient way of doing things. Its also easy to explain to others when you finally understand how it works.

The current draw from the 4017B is very low, so you can use many more 4017B's for separate LED effects.

One 4017B can drive multiple LEDs in paralell output, but no more than 500mA because that sucker can fry.

Don't worry both 555 and 4017 are readily available at online electronic stores. both are cheap too.

Any questions? just be free to ask, i'm cool with anything.

Here's the Schematic:

O.O WOAH! AWESOME  :hifive:

ok so the 4017B has a low output or input? and divides the LED into parrellel lines but are limited to as many as 500ma.... i think i understand if my explaination is right of what you wrote  ^.^;;

im ganna start making my list so i know how much of each resistor i will need to get or search for at home.

i have found acouple of different 4017B chips,
Ive deside to go with CD4017BE for a common fact with the 555timer i have choosen.

CD4017BE - 3v to 18v,counter,16pin,pdip

T555CN - General perpose 8pin,+18v,1.3v normal

for the switch

push botton sb series, spst off - (on)

i couldnt find 5 of the resistor needed but its fine ill find them in radio shack or around some CPU junks i have in my box of crap (lol)

total for the whole thing including S&H is around ...$14.00

which isnt bad counsidering its around 23 things im buying

Ok heres a crash coarse on reading part numbers. ANY 4017B can be used.

*any value resistors can be used. i just randomly came up with values off the top of my head, try your best with experimenting. IDK throw a capacitor in paralell with one of those resistors... =D

BY THE WAY, to get the circuit to run all the time you could just tie the pin 13 to +5v and let it run. I put a switch there just in case if you wanted to enable it with some other circuit you may have wanted to add. If you want a switch(which i recommend) you must get a SPST switch so you don't ruin your battery life. else use a transistor to turn it on.

Oh ok, i was worried about which kind of 4017b chip i would need to use. Well most of my resistor are all  upbove 100kohm..anyways i will get what in the bottom list since i want to do a linier fade . N ill try throwing a capcitor,i have .10uf to 100uf :) im reordering .1uf cause i ran out of those doing other mods.

Im going to run the board with a 4pin molex. I have a busted 4led brushlessfan and im going to use the wires lined into the 4pin male molex. I'll messure the voltage first to see which one is the 12v and which one is  the 5v on the molex and swap the male pins around. :)

i have space in the front behind the face to slide and hotglue the chip in place.. ill create a hole on the side for the switch. I dont mind having it on all the time..but my room  is dark like a cave and will drive me nuts watching it fade in and out all night lol.. so the switch is definitly be a MUST.

you just said all of your resistors are above 100K ohm?
They won't work.

This circuit requires resistance less than 1K Ohms.
Maybe your getting your self confused...
1 ohms                      1 ohms
10 ohms                   10 ohms
100 ohms                100 ohms
1000 ohms             1K ohms
10000 ohms          10K ohms
100000 ohms       100k ohms
1000000 ohms    1M ohms

yeh the once i have are all above 100kohms.... ohhhhh i didnt relize 1kohm = 1000ohm.. >.<

thats fine then :) ganna have to order all my resistor online... they are alot cheaper then that of radioshack's

Bump

yeh working alot right now, i got some flow coming my way... so i will be able to buy the parts i need..

:) im doing research on places to buy the chips and resistors..although i can now easily get them from my local vocitional school now were i work as an I.T. :D

awesome =D

I would have a video of the mods that made with a 4017. but the quality is poop and theres no point.

I do have an electronics topic that shows different ways to fade an LED and the 4017 is one method.

I am Waiting to get a High Def camera to record it.

yeh i saw on the thread :) i cant wait to see it in action

I guess ill wait till the vid is out so i can see how it will look like.... as for the drive of 10 different LED's that would be perfict.. right now i got 12 blue LED working in my case.Running the LED in parellel, im using a 330ohm resistor to run them :) once i get some flow and material ill start on my fade for my mod... i guess i want to make two fader..One in case running 10 LED and one running 2 LED on the front panel cover :)

you are tons of help man.. i wish i can help more out in this forum..

It would be so much easier to buy a 12f683 from newark.com and just use the fader code on here.  Unless you plan on making something crazy.

@crazy-modder

This mod is for the D.I.Y. s out there with holes in the pockets or trying to find a cheaper and more adventure's solution lol

I dont have the connection for the PIC and i dont know how to use one

Besides i like learning nerw things and if i can recycle some components off a burned out board or what not then TOP's for me

Sometimes PICs are necessary for more complicated applications, but we are just here to "simplify" things from our perspective.

Programming a chip requires more money because you have to buy or make a programmer then spend the time searching for a code thats compatible for the PIC you want.

i really dont have the money to buy alot of exsesorys to work with a PIC chip

i would love to learn how to use a PIC once day... not just now though :)
