PC temp conundrum [UPDATE + Solved]
« on: January 28, 2010, 08:40:09 AM »
ok i recently built my new pc with following config

EVGA x58 sli le
i7 920
corsair xms3 ddr3 12gb (6dimms)
hitachi 1tb hdd
BFG 280 gtx OC

The temps on cpu were 38-44 ish C  .it ran perfectly well for first few months but then i installed windows 7.
now on cpu-z it shows my cpu temp as 49-51 C  ....  why is that ?? why da hell have my temps gone up?
i have installed loads of fans in this thing and still the temps are kinda high.. disabled hyper threading still no difference.. what could it be? is it normal? has the thermal paste burnt off or what?  there are no other issues with the system just these temps which have gotten me worried

heres my fan config: maybe i just need to tweak it a bit

help...

the i7s run hot due to the amount of power they soak up
also id recommend a bid ass cooler
that and replacing the paste with atric silver 5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007&cm_re=thernal_paste-_-35-100-007-_-Product
i have a quad core q6600 an in my antec and my cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835887002
and it got my cpu down to 16-9c idle now i wanna try under load

regular atx mobo.  http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=4694158&sku=E145-2059&srkey=x58%20sli%20le  << this one to be precise i just have a cheap crappy case ~$60 .. i just shoved in $1500 worth of parts in a 60$ case lo... this is that case >>> http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2337810&CatId=1842

i dont like this case much... i had to get rid of the drive bays to allow my 280 gtx oc to fit...

I think 49-51 C is an OK temperature... I'll get back to you later after I've had some sleep.

i'd say anything under 70 on full load is safe, but the lower the temps the longer your cpu will stay alive.....and 51 idle is really bad....i idle around 20 lol with my processor oc'd

damm 20 ?? thats really nice. so i'm getting the thermal paste asap. also i redid the cables and re arranged the fans so that theres negative pressure in the case and guess what? my 280 gtx oc is running 10 C cooler than before.  the cpu is still at 45 at idle... and i think that it is some kinds sensor or driver issue cause the heatsink does not feel like theres 50 c thing under it and also i have a fan right on top of the cpu and even when i crank it all the way up, i don't really see any difference. i will boot into a live linux and then see what temps it shows.. will report back asap....
