psp jewels
« on: March 12, 2010, 01:40:06 PM »
ok, so I got plans money and skills to build a 3 axis cnc machine that will cut up to 24" I could use to to make jewels and etched xbox window inserts. the cost is around $500.

would it be worth it? is anyone still intrested in jewels?

I will probably need help with programming once I build the machine.

that would be awesome matt. i think ryan made a cnc once so he may be able to give you some tips - and hit me up as i will almost certainly be able to chip in to help you do it as i would like to see jewels on the site once more as then people can come here once again as a one stop shop.

i am not responsible for what i do or my advice

don't limit yourself to psp jewels when you could do heaps of custom parts, xbox hdd-jewels ect.

cnc machine:  a computer aided etching machine used for engraving, cutting, etc.

jewel: an engraved piece of perspex/plexiglass/whatever-name-you-use-for-it/acrylex that fits within the psp umd door engraved with a design using said cnc machine, when lights are placed around or behind it, the light travels through the un-engraved plastic and catches in the engraved bit

.....then 9 months later we have the miracle of life and that's where babies come from

Thanks for the explanation Timmy. but if that's what it is then that awesome. How do you make one? Like what all materials would you need and such?

you would make alot of money off custom parts rather than jewels (such as etched windows, panels etc.) nowdays, only thing is that cutting plastic properly on a cnc mill is a baaaaaaaaad idea because the plastic will often melt around the edges and bunch of at the sides.Although this could be fixed if you install a liquid cooling system that sprays the bit and the piece, and you also have to run the bit at a low rpm.
