DVD/BR drive problem on cechl01
« on: April 01, 2011, 07:45:22 AM »
I recently pick up twin cechl01's. One took a nasty fall but boots up fine just wont spin up the discs. The other works great and I did a hdd swap etc. But back to the broken drive. The disc will spin w/o the magnetic holder on top. but as soon as i put it back its like its putting pressure somewhere and not spinning anymore. Both lasers seem to be working good. Not sure if they are a lined anymore. But it try's to read but just wont spin. I get a blue light too.  there was also some loose plastic on one of the slider rails. this thing was hurting. I cant believe it booted after taking this hard of a shot. I took some pics.

i moved the lil plastic piece in question in the 2 different pics.

It looks like there is lint or hair in the spot I marked for one, also look under the spindle motor and see if there is hair or anything tangled in the spindle motor, that could cause it to not spin when magnet is applied .

Right next to your "fuzz" in my first pic , is a white piece of plastic on the guide rail. this is the piece I am questioning. BTW the fuzz is just an artifact of the shadow. In the second pic i moved the piece in question along the rail. It's very loose. It seems like the drive system is not raising up when disc is loaded. It spins fine . But since it wont raise up It doesn't put enough pressure to spin. Understand this thing is spottless. It broke only a couple days old and they never got it fixed. They just went out and bought a new one. LOL. Exactly my point on "disposable capitalism".

I circled the spot i see something is there, I would say its miss aligned then there is videos on You tube that show you how it should be aligned and etc... you can learn alot real fast about what is what and how things work , thats how I got in to modding and other things. you tube and readling alot on the internet, some days its like 9 or 10 hours of reading sometimes have to read it twice...lol

Does the laser move and everything works? , I just got a ps3 the controller board for the bd dvd is bad had to order a new one, to replace it,  alot of crap to go thru just to find out i can swap it out as long numbers match to the board.

Now you say when that magnetic black piece gets removed it works just fine and then when it gets put back on the motor quits? interesting. maybe the magnet interacts with the motor... IDK put your finger on the motor without the black part to see if the pressure from your fingers is enough pressure to stop the drive's motor from rotating.

Tape the disk to the spinning wheel instead of putting the magnetic thing on there see if it reads lol

OK I figured out the problem but not the cause or the solution. The problem has something to do with the whole laser tray is down or up not sure, so when the a disc is inserted it either the motor and "spinner" are not touching enough to spin or are pushing to hard. I 'll run more tests after my son goes to bed. We are trying out the move shooting games. Highly recommend "time crisis" , what a fun game with the move. Even for younger kids. point and shoot, fallow your "laser/cross-hair" . Especially pirates, no reload in that one , so younger kids don't have to press any buttons but trigger. Sorry off topic, but I had to share.

Something is out of line, its odd how this things ejects and how the laser reacts to it, the drive motor for the laser is the first thing that powers up when you turn the PS3 on, sends the laser in the Home position.

Then the motor spins that the cd,

something is out of line with the way it ejects  you . need to look further in to how the arm is underneath the blu ray drive and see if that is in its right position, if its not then that would cause the magnet not to sit flat on the spindle motor and probably binding the spindle motor as it spins.or jamming it up need to look further into how the tray moves up and down when the cd is ejected and recieved in the blu- ray drive.

update: I got the laser to raise up and I  totally rebuilt the rest of the machine including new artic silver. This was the cleanest piece of electronics I have ever worked on. It sucks the laser went in the fall. So back to the point. The laser spins fine now, It's trying like madd to read the disc. Ive cleaned both lasers. I think its just to far off track to bring back. Looks like a drive swap is in order. Now I got to find a drive.
side note: to get the drive to spin correctly I had to remove the 2 plastic guards over the drive rails. the disc kept nicking them gently. So its not aligned right yet. And the loose piece was just the stop for the laser. I put it back to its original position.
