Splatter Painting?
« on: May 02, 2011, 07:26:53 PM »
I was wondering what would be the best way of doing a splattered paint job? Like having a base coat, then getting a splatter paint look around a center point. I know you can use brushes but that would give me more of a whipped design rather than a splatter I guess. Basically just want some suggestions. Thanks.

As for doing a splatter paint work they use brush or other things you can use, torn newspaper I have seen it done with , just by dipping it in to the paint and slinging it, same way they do with a brush. as for the base coats could be in silver or even pearlesant color.

I am not too sure about splatter painting, but I do know they make different kinds of texture paints, on the older cars they use what they call a trunk paint , which you can buy at meijers, walmart or auto parts store, they also have what they call wrinkle paint, which is pretty cool also.

What is it that you are painting?

I'm wanting to paint a 360 case but I'll be cutting a design into the case and want a splatter design to kind of border it.

after you cut out what you want on the case why not just take a paint brush and jam it into what you cut out? letting the bristles make a splatter effect around where you cut?

I would google some types of splatter painting, maybe then you will get some ideas of what your actually looking to do. It would be your own design because no 2 splatters will look alike. anything you do will be different from anyone else.

your got some good ideas cant wait to see what you come up with

i recommend taking a piece of paper and taping to a wall or something. Practice. Take a couple different brushes and flick them at the paper. If you take one brush and flick it against another brush it will give a cool effect also. for masking use vinyl film sold at craft stores. When you get desired affect set up the 360 case and give it a go. Have confidence. You can do it and we're here to help if you run into trouble.
for paint selection try practicing with cheap acrylics . then break out and test some lacquer  based paints on the paper .

I have used a toothbrush for a splatter effect before, put some paint on the brush, then push your finger down on the bristles and move it back causing the bristles to flick forward and splatter paint everywhere.

EDIT: this will give a very fine splatter, the technique is often used when painting models.

If you want large spatter (you can control the size, though works best for larger) you can spray some of the paint into the cap of the can and fling it at whatever you're painting...

Thanks for the help guys, I'll try a couple of the suggestions and see what works best. Will post pics of the xbox whenever I actually complete it.
