ps3 controller led modz
« on: May 15, 2011, 07:08:51 AM »
so im new here and i just started to modd a bit with my controllers. and i have a few questions sinse the player status leds arent really a big of a deal for me but the led behind the ps button is.
i bought 5 mm white LED to put behind it but when i have it all soldered and put into place it all works but i think it pushesh against the board thingy. and when i connect the controller it does light up but it starts pressing all buttons and i have no control over it.  anyone knows how to stop this? and whats better to use, 3mm or 5mm LED's.

and another thing, where do u guys get clear buttons at? i cant find them anywhere on ebay anymore, i also heard that the xbox thumbsticks and buttons fit in the ps3 controller, can anyone confirm this? all i still need is a clear d-pad now.

thanks! TomasR

OK , I'm here. Sorry been super busy. Yes clear buttons are coming for ps3 . Clear xbox analogs can be used with some minor modification but the dome is to small so when you push the analog , the edge of the analog shows. If all you need is dpad I have a betta test you can have. You pay shipping. Lil update on clear analogs, I am making a switchable thumb pad. so people can put custom thumb pads on without taking aprt controller , just swap analog heads (will only work with my analogs). I am also making custom thumb pads. This will be for both xbox and PS3.
As far as you LED problem I'll get back to you.I got so much going on its not funny.

thanks and can someone help me with what resistors i need to use and all that, i just need a little help since i have done this 2 years ago alot on school but i forgot it. so ye, just need a little push in my back for that.

Tips:
PSP slim dpads fit in the ps3 perfectly, you just have to move the tabs from the original dpad over. I cut them off and melted them. These dpads come in many colors, even clear.

If you want your PS button to be really different, take some sandpaper and sand the PS logo off. It makes the button completely clear, and add a piece of white film under it. This makes the light spread through the button much better, and it just looks different from the rest. If you have a black PS button, I recommend doing this, if you have a white PS button there's really no need for it.

If your led doesnt fit, use a dremel and shave off the edges. You can make a 5mm led really thin this way, and can get it to fit in places you couldn't before. If you're desperate you could try cutting it with snips, but this usually breaks the epoxy lens in places you didn't want it too..

For your problem, it sounds like the led is pushing the membrane away from the board, so it is not making full connection, just shave off the led, or use a smaller led.

well i just talked a little with my stepdad and i figured out how everything works with the resistors and all that. but 1 more question. behind the d-pad is 1 led enough? or should i put 4 behind them?

thanks and extra thanks for the sandpapering the ps button idea... never thaught of it.

with the stupid work you do on making the led smaller you could just put a smd or 2mm led in.

now if you can use this section im not sure but the chap puts leds everywhere in the controller plus uses a fader (this is why i have not done my tut on ps3 faders on a controller)

https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php/topic,33172.0.html

plus if you looked on my tut you can still use a 5mm if you make the hole bigger and bend the led right

Honestly why in the hell are you criticizing?? Because I had good ideas? what you are saying doesn't even make sense.

the "think" is is takes no more than 20 seconds to rub your ps button on 320 grit sandpaper, and get all of the coating off. this way the light diffuses much better. this is especially good on a black button, because we all know if you have a black object light will not shine through it. With the clear button, and added white film or paper behind it, it looks much better than the standard. I never said ANYONE was obligated to do it.. and i never said anyone wants to sand all the time. no one wants to solder all the time. no one wants to paint all the time... come on now.

PLUS with the stupid work, you can't get smd leds that fade through different colors. Maybe you have a 5mm led that does that, but you can't get it to fit in an electronic device. Dremel it down, and bam, it fits... Don't understand what in the hell is so stupid to understand about that.

Toad: didn't really understand what you typed LOL, but yeah if you sand the back, it becomes completely transparent

Tomas:I use 3mm all the time, they fit perfect, but sometimes you have to hack away a little plastic in the controller. The amount of leds you want depends on the brightness you want, type of leds, etc... it all depends. If they are the right voltage, 1 can be enough, however at least two will make the light spread look more uniform.

so i lost 2 green smds so i decided to put 2 green and 2 white smds in the blue controller and then i will leave the white controller with 4 reds in it instead of 2 read 2 white.
this is what i got for now, now need to wait for my volt meter and all that and then order some resistors and then do the ps button led mod.

then i will have to wait for a clear d-pad and clear thumbsticks with colored tops.

no idea why i took that picture with my ipod upside down but ye.... yo ucant really tell wich controller is what color but the one with blue leds is a black controller and the other one is blue

i assume with numbs you mean thumbsticks??? in the blue controller om gonna do them green as well and the normal buttons green/yellow. and on the black controller im gonna do those blue and all other buttons white.

and for the white controller that i still need to recieve im gonna put all red leds in it.

and how is your molding going??? and can i already buy the clear d-pad? and are you also going to make the thumbsticks with colored top or not?

thanks, Tomas

Like I said you can have a betta dpad, Its completely done just has a couple lil tiny bubbles in the inside. If you want color you will have to wait for next pour. Its been raining here for a couple days and I need a nice day with low humidity and warm temp to pour.  I will do a special pour for you for colored analogs, you want colored buttons 2? please post  a pic of what you want if you can? just lable what buttons you want colored etc. Pm me your address and I'll send you a dpad. I'll tell you how much shipping is when i send it out. Can't see it being more than a buck. If your going to order a set of buttons i can just add the shipping costs to the button set.

drill the button out, and fill it with hot glue... try to make the inside of the button raised the same amount of height as the stock ps3 button. It will feel much better, much "clickier"

oh yeah, i'm glad you used my sand method!!!!!!!!!!! looks nice doesn't it ;) light that baby up
