latest PC build
« on: August 10, 2011, 09:38:29 PM »
One of my friends father had his old PC motherboard take a dive so he decided to have me build him a new one.  this build is nothing special he just needs something for web browsing and file his company info. he wants to convert wedding videos to DVD also so I and going to install DVD flick for him.

Case: COOLER MASTER Elite 430 (I love this one botatom mounted PSU plenty of room and only $50)
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H (new AM3+ CPU socket)
CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition (put this one in because of the L3 cache)
HD: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB
ODD: Samsung SH-222AL
RAM: 8GB (2X2GB) G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 1600
PSU: CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 430W
OS: Windows 7 Home Prem. 64 bit
also a new keyboard and mouse just something cheap with good ratings

When I first put it together I was getting blue screens because the motherboard defaulted the RAM to 1600 so I turned it down to 1333 and had my brother play WoW for about 8 hours and no more blue screens.  I am going to run memtest and prime 95 for a few hours also before I turn it loose.  I also reinstalled Windows because I don't want to take a chance that some OS files were corrupt while installing at 1600.

After that is done just need to put open office and his old files back on there.  build was about $560 altogether not a bad setup for the money if I do say so myself.

Lol the dudes only running 1 graphics card and he put 13k into it doubtful. your friend probubly put about 2k-3kish and that's including the monitors.

And nice setup pete that was a good choice in procs, u should look into seeing if your motherboard is compatible for core unlocks because u have a chance of turning your x2 555 into an x4 955 if you can unlock your extra cores.

Overall nice setup :D

as a past owner/user of 555's I would highly DISCOURAGE a core unlock. I mean its a cool concept that you can pay for a 2 core processor and get 4 cores, but the reality is the cores are disabled due to them failing factory testing. By unlocking these cores you can cause massive system stability issues. My first 555 unlocked but caused my system to crash frequently (cpu got trashed), my second wouldn't unlock, I hear few and far between stories (of questionable validity) of maintained success with this process.

From experience with this processor: this particular model comes with the smaller phenom heatsink, so if you plan to overclock you will want to switch out the stock cooler to avoid heating issues. On a side note ensure the case has adequate airflow and the heatsink is cleaned of dust every once in a while, since even at stock conditions this processor runs rather hot.

Hopefully none of this will affect you since by the sounds of it your dad doesn't require a powerhouse of a machine. Anyway, not a shabby build for a low budget pc, post some pics up for us :D

I put a 555 in one of my friends builds before and he tried unlocking the cores and screwed up everything I'm just going to leave this one alone.

@nEoVaLoR
No I don't think I went overboard at all
